February 1… first day of Black History Month!
It was only a generation ago (1954) that the Supreme Court ruled in Brown v. Board that separate but equal education was unconstitutional. The Court instructed the states to start desegregation will “with all deliberate speed”. And deliberate they did!! Segregationists and Constitutional “Originalists” objected to the ruling and it took over 10 years to pass the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts.
When is white history month?

Most people consider a generation to be either 20 or 25 years; Brown v Board of Education was 70 years ago!
How many people here went to segregated schools? I turn 71 in a few months, and I was in a segregated school for part of the third, then fourth, and fifth grades, before the black school mysteriously burned to the ground. The schools I attended in kindergarten, first, second, and the first part of the third grade were not segregated, but there were no blacks around in Antioch, California and Portland, Maine at the time.

I grew up in the Missouri Ozarks in the 50s and 60s, and the public schools there were integrated. Missouri schools desegregated in 1954 as instructed by the Supreme Court.
We Missouri redneck hillbillies may have been more progressive than CA or ME at the time.
We had several black kids in grade school from the 1st grade (1958) on, but then we lived in poor/ working class neighborhoods.

Dana, I’m in the same situation. I’m 71, and never had any black students in any of my schools from K to 12. Mostly because no black families lived in my city at the time. Of course, that was by design back in those days.
