Sorta Blogless Sunday Pinup

Patriotic Pinup

Happy Sunday! Another great day in the Once and Future Nation of America. The Sun is shining, the mockingbird is totally going to town (he’s actually doing gunfire from the rednecks across the river), and bars made a lot of money from people celebrating St. Patrick’s Day early. This pinup is by Peter Driben with a wee bit of help.

The Rev. Eric Rucker is an ordained minister in the Episcopal Church and he pastors at Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Des Moines, Iowa. He was discussing the Iowa state law forbidding teachers from discussing the racial history of America.

I grew up with the implicit knowledge that I’m “white.” But “white” is not an ethnic group. Ta-Nehisi Coates observes that I am from “people who believe themselves to be white.” This phrase uncovers the truth that “white” is an idea created by people in power to maintain dominance. Thus who qualifies as “white” is continually shifting.

I discovered that my ancestors arrived on this continent in 1690 and founded Ruckersville, Virginia. I also found evidence that we “owned” enslaved African people.

The first step in repentance is telling the truth. The second step is confessing our sin. And the third is repairing the harm (Luke 19:1-10).

I am going to tell my son about our whole family history. I am going to teach him that he can be grateful for the sacrifices of his forbears while also having the courage to reckon with our crimes against African and Indigenous people.

I am going to help him understand how he still benefits from advantages that were gained because of racism, past and present. And I am going to show him how his faith calls him to a process of love and repentance to correct racial injustices.

Anything less than this honesty is a disservice to my son, and to our whole community.

More drama-the law allows a “robust discussion of the causes and the consequences of racism, sexism and oppression”. The guidance makes clear that teaching about racist or sexist Iowa or US policies is allowed as long as long as you don’t say that the US is “fundamentally or systemically racist or sexist”. So much of what liberals believe to be true simply is not…

    • Elwood P. Dowd says:

You captured rule 1 but missed the next several…

The law prohibits public employees, including K-12 and higher education educators, from teaching, advocating, instructing, or training any employee or student that:

Any race or sex is inherently superior to another race or sex.
Anyone, whether “consciously or unconsciously,” is inherently racist, sexist, or oppressive because of their race or sex.
Anyone should be treated worse because of their race or sex.
      People of one race or sex cannot and should not try to treat people the same regardless of their race or sex;
One’s moral character is necessarily determined by one’s race or sex.
One should, because of their race or sex, bear responsibility for actions committed in the past by members of the same race or sex.
One should feel discomfort, guilt, anguish, or other forms of psychological distress because of their race or sex.
Meritocracy or “traits such as a hard work ethic are racist or sexist, or were created by a particular race to oppress another race.”

      • Jl says:

And how is that “forbidding teachers from discussing the racial history of America?”

        • Elwood P. Dowd says:

Teachers are admonished not to make students feel discomfort, guilt, anguish, or other forms of psychological distress because of their race or sex.

Are teachers responsible for the feelings of high school students? Sort of vague isn’t it?
