Trump says abortion is up to the states, declines to endorse national limit
Former President Donald Trump on Monday said abortion should be left to the states in the post-Roe era, declining to endorse any national limit on the procedure.
His announcement, shared on Truth Social, is likely to disappoint anti-abortion groups who hoped he would use his bully pulpit to endorse national restrictions on abortion, especially after his campaign floated a 15-week ban earlier this year. Trump instead said that it was “up to the states to do the right thing” on abortion, painting Democrats as “radical” on the issue.
“The states will determine by vote or legislation or perhaps both, and whatever they decide must be the law of the land,” Trump said. “Many states will be different. Many will have a different number of weeks, or some will [be] more conservative than others, and that’s what they will be. At the end of the day, this is all about the will of the people.”
The announcement highlights Trump’s recognition that abortion has dogged Republicans on the campaign trail since the fall of Roe v. Wade nearly two years ago — and his primary goal of winning the 2024 election. He has chided other Republicans for speaking “inaccurately” on abortion, intimating that severe restrictions have cost the GOP winnable elections. On Sunday night and again Monday morning he urged people to “follow their heart” or their religion but encouraged voters to remember the stakes.
Political or not, abortion decisions belong in the states. I know many will disagree with me, but, Congress should not be banning or approving abortion for the nation. While I’d certainly be in favor of European styled laws with bans around 15 weeks, it is not a federal issue (excepting where the US government should not be spending taxpayer money on abortions). Things that are not specifically mentioned as a Congressional duty must be left to states and The People.
Trump’s position has made many upset
Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, in a statement to POLITICO reiterated the group’s commitment to “defeat President Biden” and congressional Democrats, but condemned Trump’s decision.
Trump also got into a spat with Lindsay Graham. And

For years, at a gut level, the former president has feared the backlash he might face for taking a hard-line position on abortion. And despite his attempt to fog up the issue with his new, state-based stance, Trump is still likely to pay a price with voters for appointing the Supreme Court justices who overturned Roe v. Wade. And his decision not to endorse a ban has exposed deep fissures within his own party. After Graham released a statement Monday in which he said he “respectfully disagree[s]” with Trump’s position, Trump did not let it go, instead accusing Graham and Republicans like him of sinking the GOP.
And then there’s Biden
(Politico) President Joe Biden lashed out at Donald Trump’s announcement Monday that abortion should be left up to the states and warned of consequences should Trump win in November.
“No one trusts Donald Trump,” Biden said, pointing to how the former president made a “political deal” with the anti-abortion right.
The president went on to say that his predecessor’s lack of endorsement for a national ban was an illusion. “If they put one on his desk, he said he’d sign it.”
Biden made his remarks during a high-end fundraiser in Chicago featuring about 50 friends and donors, including Bill Daley, former chief of staff to President Barack Obama.
Blah blah blah. These are the same people who push abortion as contraception, and are happy to make sure that blacks are aborting their babies at higher rates than any other group. Anyhow, Trump’s position may not be the moral position, but, it is the correct Constitution position. I mostly do not get involved in this issue except as a political position, and I agree with Trump.

I agree that this is a states issue now. Some will be more restrictive than others and that is good.
My own choice is that states regulate the practice of abortion just as they do with all other invasive, elective medical procedures. Certification of practitioners, licenses, inspections, and direct billing to the people getting the service. State medical boards should establish rules and common practice, not politicians. And I say this knowing that most state medical boards can be counted on to support almost anything in exchange for money. The principle here is more important to me than the outcome.
It is disingenuous for pro-life Republicans to lead the charge against ROE for so many years claiming it was a states issue, and now demanding that the federal government establish a national policy on it.
The critical element for abortion is not access, but who pays for that access. Big abortion corporations like planned parenthood, have always lobbied in favor of that sweet, sweet government money to pay for all of their services. The evidence is clear that when it comes to elective medical procedures, the practice improves and the cost goes down when the person demanding the service pays the bill. Not government and not insurance. (see corrective eye surgery for examples). Using other people’s money to pay for what you want is the fast track to very expensive decisions.
The problem with your argument, as I see it, is that you think all abortions are elective. Unfortunately, or fortunately, this isn’t true.
I don’t care. The obvious truth is that we are discussing elective abortions. Unelective ones are already covered by normal medical practice in every state. The Normal practice of the Big Abortion Inc (planned parenthood) is to create test cases of the small percentage of a small percentage of cases that emote sympathy from every human being who is not a sociopath and build public policy around that. But the real public policy debate has nothing to do with that. Even the “rape, incest, and health of the mother” claims are weak sauce intended to open the door to “for any reason”. If a woman wishes to abort her incest or rape offspring, I don’t see why she would wait longer than absolutely necessary to discover it to put an end to it. Many courts have already declared that “health of the mother” includes mental health and any woman with sufficient coaching from Planned Parenthood Inc can make the claim that she is suffering mental anguish from being pregnant.
In any case, I don’t care. I am not pro-life. Women, and men, should be able to kill their offspring any time they want to, up to age 18. I insist though that they do it humanely. So trot out your 60 year old argument for someone else.
Question… What if every woman (and man pretending to be a woman) has an unrestricted right to abortion on demand, but no doctors are willing to perform those procedures? Is it really a personal right if it rests on the demand that someone else be forced under penalty of law to provide it? Obviously, this is an academic discussion since there are no shortage of doctors willing to do anything for money, even mutilate healthy children.

After a baby is born it is homicide to kill them. We have laws covering that. Some wish to declare that a two-cell zygote is a person with all the pursuant rights accorded to American persons, calling any interference in the process homicide or at least a death to be investigated. Some who call all abortions murder are still willing to compromise depending on Mr Trump’s mood.
The US far-right has been working hard to intimidate medical personnel from providing care to women. Fire-bombings and even murder of personnel has been used by Republiguns.
The Republiguns shot themselves in their feet when they tossed out Roe v Wade and its Sensible, Constitutional Abortion Position, which allowed abortions through 12 weeks, with restrictions in the 2nd trimester and nearly a ban in the 3rd trimester. But no, the Republiguns are interested in total bans (yes, yes they pretend it’s a states rights issue, but be real). Idaho is working on ways to limit women from leaving the state for care!

Methinks that Mr. Trump reviewed the issue, the Constitution, and the SCOTUS opinion on Roe v. Wade and made the logical decision that this is an issue for the States to determine, not an over reaching federal government.
Obviously, abortion was not addressed in the Constitution therefore the Tenth Amendment states that it is up to the states to make their own decisions. Roe was bad law and a particularly political ruling and should have been immediately overturned.
So were the Supreme Court justices, Blackmun, Burger, Douglas, Brennan, Stewart, Marshall, Scalia, O’Connor, Kennedy, Souter, Breyer and Powell over the past 50 years dishonest, stupid, anti-Constitution, uninformed, commies, murderers or all the above?

Today, the Arizona Supreme Court says Arizona should follow an 1864 law banning abortions in almost all cases. It makes no exceptions for rape or incest and makes performing an abortion punishable by two to five years in prison.
All seven justices are members of the Republicun Party, appointed by Republicun governors.
An effort is already underway to put a measure on 2024 ballots that would enshrine abortion rights in the AZ state constitution.
Last week, the Florida Supremes triggered a six-week abortion ban. But the court also approved ballot language for a proposed amendment that gives voters in November the choice of whether to explicitly protect abortion access in the state constitution.
All seven Florida justices were appointed by Republicun governors.
