PRC Comes Up With New Idea: $25 Minimum Wage For Health Workers

Gee, what could possibly go wrong?

California Health Workers May Face Rude Awakening With $25 Minimum Wage Law

Nearly a half-million health workers who stand to benefit from California’s nation-leading $25 minimum wage law could be in for a rude awakening if hospitals and other health care providers follow through on potential cuts to hours and benefits.

A medical industry challenge to a new minimum wage ordinance in one Southern California city suggests layoffs and reductions in hours and benefits, including cuts to premium pay and vacation time, could be one result of a state law set to begin phasing in in June. However, some experts are skeptical of that possibility.

The California Hospital Association brought a partly successful legal challenge to Inglewood’s $25 minimum wage ordinance, which barred employers from taking those sorts of steps to offset their higher costs.

“Layoffs, reductions in premium pay rates, reductions in non-wage benefits, reductions in hours, and increased charges are consequences of an employer having less money to spend—which will necessarily be the case given the significant increase in spending on wages due to the minimum wage,” the association said in its lawsuit. Additional examples include reducing health coverage and charging for parking or work-related equipment.

All those results are a wee bit more important than when it happens in the food industry, eh? I wonder if they realize that a lot of health workers are employed by the local, county, and state governments, who would have to raise taxes/fees and/or reallocate money from other budget sectors? The Inglewood suit is interesting, in that their law stated private businesses could no longer make their own economic decisions despite the increased costs.

Providers could reduce the services they offer, pare back charity care, and cut or delay capital investments, Spetz said. In the long term, she expects some combination of spending cuts and revenue increases.

Both the state law and local ordinance cover far more than doctors and nurses, with a definition of health worker that includes janitors, housekeepers, groundskeepers, security guards, food service workers, laundry workers, and clerical staff.

So, pretty much everyone. I wonder how many are part of unions that give to Democrats? And will soon understand that the road to Hell is paved with good intentions?

“The minimum wage an employer has to pay its employees will invariably affect the total amount of compensation it is able or willing to pay,” he wrote “This will then invariably affect the number of employees it can retain and the number of hours those employees will be scheduled to work.”

Lawmakers should be required to take Economics 101, well, Democrats, anyhow. Then have to spend at least several hours a week following around business owners and bookkeepers to understand How Economics Works.

(KTLA) Some fast food restaurant chains have raised menu prices by as much as 8% since California’s $20 an hour minimum wage law took effect April 1, according to a new report.

Wendy’s has hiked prices by roughly 8% while Chipotle has raised prices by 7.5%, according to data from Kalinowski Equity Research and cited in The New York Post.

Taco Bell raised menu prices by 3% and Burger King hiked prices by 2%, the report found.

Seattle-based Starbucks increased prices by about 7% in California.

Huh.

I don’t know where they’re getting that Chipotle raise prices by 7.5% since my uncle who lives in Cali and is an owner of more than a dozen Chipotles just told my dad that he’s raising his prices 10% June 1st. He’s already raised them 5%. He charged his unit managers with identifying the two to three people the store can do without for termination. He’s planning on all the firings for the last week in may. All the menu prices are set to be adjusted shortly and Chipotle as a corporation is devising new weight and volume standards for their products. So basically they’re gonna downsize everything raise the prices and fire a bunch of people. Way to go California I don’t know where you guys went for economics class but you should demand your money back.

    • Elwood P. Dowd says:

Perhaps Mr Brandon meant that his CA uncle works for the Chipotle corporation and is responsible for more than a dozen of the 477 Chipotle corporation sites there. It is unlike Mr Brandon to mislead anyone. It’s fair to ask if any of his uncle’s Chipotles were responsible for the rash of food poisonings in California (see below).

Anyway, today Chipotle is doing well financially, even after their $25 million fine, a result of their 2015-2018 poisonings (norovirus) of a couple thousand Americans. They’ve also had a E. coli and Salmonella outbreaks. I wouldn’t eat there.

      • drowningpuppies says:

Karen (aka Rimjob): It’s fair to ask if any of his uncle’s Chipotles were responsible for the rash of food poisonings in California
Yeah, Rimjob worried about being fair. Right.

  2. Dana says:

So, what is a “health care worker”? Nurses and nursing assistants and phlebotomists and X-Ray techs are almost certainly making more than that already.

But what about janitors and cafeteria workers, or the people who launder the sheets and blankets and towels? That’s where the Pyrite State could see some wage inflation, or hospital employees laid off in favor of contract services to provide those things more cheaply. The contract service workers would probably make less than the workers in those positions in the hospitals, and almost certainly have fewer benefits.

If health care does get hit with increased costs, who pays those costs? You got it: the health insurance companies, which means the healtyh insurance rates will have to increase.

  3. Dan says:

If they start cutting pay for the people who actually provide the skilled medir care in order to pay janitors and old fat security guards more you will very quickly find you no longer have any nurses or techs available to actually provide the care that the doctors order. Doctors do NOT do most of he healthcare work. They oversee it but nurses and techs do the actual work. And nurses/techs are generally fairly intelligent. Smart enough to find other types of work if they start seeing pay cuts.

  4. H says:

LG Brandon I am unsure of what you mean by “my uncle owns 12”

When I googled chipotle it says that they are not franchises but corporate owned

Tried to find out more about ownership but eas unable
I did see that each is worth 2 million
    So??? He owns 12?

  5. H says:

After 3 straight years of decreasing population Cali last year had an increase in population
Lol I guess that is why they vote blue, because they are rich. It will probably cost 20 bucks to eat at Chipotle, but still less than the pay for a fast food or healthcare worker. But even at 15 bucks in low cost red states it might take 2 hours of work for a minimum wage worker to eat thege
And the median house price has gone up 100000$ to 810000$ in the last 3 years.

  6. H says:

People who live in the poorer red states are always so willing to give financial advice to those living in the wealthiest blue states.
“Look how happily we live with our $7.35 minimum wage because we have a lower cost of living”
Do Hondas cost less in red states? Housing sure does be because well, you get what you pay for.

    • CarolAnn says:

Why do you despise people poorer than yourself? You know the wealthy blue states are the ones with the most homeless people especially Cali. Not that it matters but poor people are human beings too even though you seem to think that they’re just to be treated like dogs. You’re a very despicable and disgusting human being. The way you look down on everybody else is despicable. Just because they live in a red state doesn’t mean anything they’re still an American citizen they work harder than you do in most cases I’m sure. And yet you think you’re so hot high and mighty you look down on everybody.

      • Elwood P. Dowd says:

        Hi CarolAnn,

It’s not clear that Mr H despises the poor or those poorer than himself. For whatever reasons, the poorest states tend to be red states. It could be that Republican leadership in a state leads to poverty or perhaps impoverished people prefer Republican leadership. What do you think?

        Mississippi 19.58%
        Louisiana 18.65%
        New Mexico 18.55%
        West Virginia 17.10%
        Kentucky 16.61%
        Arkansas 16.08%
        Alabama 15.98%
        Oklahoma 15.27%
        South Carolina 14.68%
        Tennessee 14.62%

Except for New Mexico, the highest poverty rates are found in red states.

Except for Utah, the lowest poverty rates are found in blue states.

        Virginia 10.01%
        Massachusetts 9.85%
        Connecticut 9.78%
        Colorado 9.78%
        New Jersey 9.67%
        Minnesota 9.33%
        Hawaii 9.26%
        Utah 9.13%
        Maryland 9.02%
        New Hampshire 7.42%

We should work to reduce the poverty rates in red states. Why do you oppose that? Shouldn’t we want more states to have the advantages of blue states?

Blue states tend to have greater industrialization, higher rates of education, higher taxes, higher rates of unionizaition, higher pay, better healthcare, more balanced income distribution etc.

Some analysts attribute the better conditions in blue states to be a sequelae of the Civil War, where the North industrialized and the South remained largely agrarian. Southern conservatives left the Democratic Party the 40s through the 70s

        • CarolAnn says:

It could be that Republican leadership in a state leads to poverty or perhaps impoverished people prefer Republican leadership. What do you think?

I agree. That could be the only answer. Therefore I believe that the only way to rectify the situation is to turn all the blue states red and then you’ll have one big red country just like China, North Korea, and Cuba.

We should work to reduce the poverty rates in red states. Why do you oppose that? Shouldn’t we want more states to have the advantages of blue states?

Where have I ever stated at anytime of anywhere can I oppose reducing poverty in red states or even in blue states. You do realize there’s poverty in blue states right? You do realize that when you see you on the television all those fear of blacks robbing places shooting place shooting up places they are almost always blue states? You do realize when you see buildings being burnt down by angry mobs they’re almost always blue states? When you see all those tents laying out in the streets all those people laying on the ground numbed out of their mind covered in shit and piss they are almost always blue states and blue cities in the blue states? So you can say what you want about average people and poorer people but they’re not criminals, they’re not robbing you and they’re not burning anything down and they’re not living in their own shit.

Southern conservatives left the Democratic Party the 40s through the 70s

No they did not. The Democratic Party decided to adopt the party line of socialist and communist nations in the 40s and they did their walk through the institutions as you’re well aware of. In other words the Democrat party left the conservatives not the other way around. What’s left in the Democratic Party today are a bunch of left wing moonbats like you. You have more in common with a communist running a prison camp in Russia then you have with a American who votes for Trump just as you have more in common with a moslem member of Hamas than you do with somebody who’s a Christian or would dare to vote republican.

The the conservatives didn’t leave the Democrat party back in the 40s fifties 60s and 70s they left America. They became the antithesis and the enemy of everything our constitution stood for that’s now been taken apart and has absolutely no bearing on what’s going on. Look what they’re doing to Donald Trump and they have yet to prosecute or indict anybody that was on epstein’s island. That’s where the real crimes are. The Democrat party right now is in the process of systematically destroying our Republic and you’re helping them because you’re an anti American thug and a communist racist. You hate the American race you hate the American people you hate everything we stand for.

          • Elwood P. Dowd says:

            Hi CarolAnn,

Do you actually believe that New York, California, Illinois and New Jersey are more like North Korea than they are like America or are you just being hyperbolic?

Regarding violent crime rates (violent crime/100,000):

            1 New Mexico 7.80
            2 Alaska 7.59
            3 Arkansas 6.45
            4 Louisiana 6.29
            5 Tennessee 6.22
            6 California 4.99
            7 Colorado 4.92

            8 South Carolina 4.91
            9 Missouri 4.88
            10 Michigan 4.61

It’s 5 red vs 5 blue. Arkansas is more dangerous than Michigan!

All states have poverty. It’s just that there is more poverty in red states. Are there systematic steps to take to reduce overall poverty?

Regardless of who left who, the conservatives in South were Democrats and are now Republicans, and it had more to do with race than socialism.

The Republican party was founded in the mid-1800s as a Northern party to oppose slavery and immigration, and post-Civil War Southern Reconstruction was led by the Republicans but was opposed by the Democrats. The Democratic Party became the defender of the Southern way of life, including maintaining white privileges! In 1948, Democratic Presidential candidate, Harry S Truman, added a pro-civil rights plank to the Democratic platform. This caused a schism in the party, with the “Dixiecrats” led by Strom Thurmond holding a separate convention.

In 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson pushed and signed the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act in 1965. Said President Johnson to an aide Bill Moyers: “I think we just delivered the South to the Republican party for a long time to come.”

Anyway, your hatred of those who disagree with you is obvious. Do you really believe Presidents Truman, Kennedy, LB Johnson, Carter, Clinton, Obama and Biden were/are communists?

Let me ask you a question or two: Is Israel a communist nation? Would you support Israel’s social infrastructure for the US?

    • L'Roy White says:

“Look how happily we live with our $7.35 minimum wage because we have a lower cost of living”, you really are a classist. You are the most status conscious person that comments here you think that money is everything no wonder you’re a communist.

Say you’re either a rich man living in a rich state or a poor man living in a rich state but let me inform you that everybody in a blue state is not rich. California cities like LA and San Francisco are where we see all these people living in tents and crapping on the sidewalks isn’t it? I just don’t get you. Everybody in a blue state isn’t rich and everybody in a red state isn’t poor.

Just when I think the folks running the Pyrite State couldn’t get any stupider, they prove me wrong. The Fast-Food Minimum Wage has been such a disaster, hurting the very people it was supposed to ‘help’, that now they want to double down and do the same thing for the health care industry?

It’s time to nuke Sacramento and the Blue Coast from orbit. It’s the only way to be sure…

    Chicken Little Man

Try using FBI figures and you will see that the violent crimes are in the city/metro numbers.

FYI – TN has about 36500 in the city/metro which is Memphis/Nashville/Knoxville/Chat.. Outside in the country the number 3000…. so the per 100K number may be accurate but totally misleading…all of these metro/city areas have been Democrat for years…

This shows that figures don’t lie but liars can figure. https://www.thepiratescove.us/wp-content/plugins/wp-monalisa/icons/wpml_unsure.gif

      Chicken Shit Loser Man,

So what? If you have a point, please make it.

Unfortunately for your weak-minded “argument” the red states still have higher violent crime rates. You may not realize this but Louisville IS part of violent Kentucky. Baton Rouge IS part of violent Louisiana. Kansas City IS in violent Missouri. Jackson IS part of Mississippi. Did Juneau that Juneau IS part of violent Alaska? Little Rock IS in Arkansas.

Why do states controlled by conservative Republicans have high violent crime rates? We get it. You blame “urbanites”. Even accepting your argument, it begs the question, ‘Why are red state “urbanites” so violent’? or simply, ‘Why is there more crime where there are people’?

Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, Seattle, Atlanta, San Francisco, Miami, Houston, Dallas, Boston are huge metro areas yet their states have lower violent crime rates than Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Kentucky, etc.

Hint: For what ever reason violent crime tracks with poverty.

  11. James Lewis says:

    Chicken Little Man

Excuse me from giving you credit for not being dumb.

The purpose was to show that the 100k/state number is drastically impacted by the city vs country numbers. Again, TN’s metro/city numbers are 35287 vs country numbers of 2962. That’s about 12.5 times worse.

CO follows along, 2000 vs around 1000.

Fl is around 80000 vs 2000, city vs county.

The cities are Democratically governed. You can’t lump the numbers together to get a meaningful result.

    But you know that.

Arkansas city metro is 12317 vs country side 2058. Again Democrat controlled.

CA metro is 170,193 vs 3500. Arkansas is 6 to 1. CA is like 50 to 1.

    Where would you feel safer?

    • Elwood P. Dowd says:

      Chicken Fooker Man,

As I said, the murders are where all the people are. So yes, a county with 2.6 million people has more violent crime than a county with 1988 people.
