California Health Workers May Face Rude Awakening With $25 Minimum Wage Law
Nearly a half-million health workers who stand to benefit from California’s nation-leading $25 minimum wage law could be in for a rude awakening if hospitals and other health care providers follow through on potential cuts to hours and benefits.
A medical industry challenge to a new minimum wage ordinance in one Southern California city suggests layoffs and reductions in hours and benefits, including cuts to premium pay and vacation time, could be one result of a state law set to begin phasing in in June. However, some experts are skeptical of that possibility.
The California Hospital Association brought a partly successful legal challenge to Inglewood’s $25 minimum wage ordinance, which barred employers from taking those sorts of steps to offset their higher costs.
“Layoffs, reductions in premium pay rates, reductions in non-wage benefits, reductions in hours, and increased charges are consequences of an employer having less money to spend—which will necessarily be the case given the significant increase in spending on wages due to the minimum wage,” the association said in its lawsuit. Additional examples include reducing health coverage and charging for parking or work-related equipment.
All those results are a wee bit more important than when it happens in the food industry, eh? I wonder if they realize that a lot of health workers are employed by the local, county, and state governments, who would have to raise taxes/fees and/or reallocate money from other budget sectors? The Inglewood suit is interesting, in that their law stated private businesses could no longer make their own economic decisions despite the increased costs.
Providers could reduce the services they offer, pare back charity care, and cut or delay capital investments, Spetz said. In the long term, she expects some combination of spending cuts and revenue increases.
Both the state law and local ordinance cover far more than doctors and nurses, with a definition of health worker that includes janitors, housekeepers, groundskeepers, security guards, food service workers, laundry workers, and clerical staff.

(KTLA) Some fast food restaurant chains have raised menu prices by as much as 8% since California’s $20 an hour minimum wage law took effect April 1, according to a new report.
Wendy’s has hiked prices by roughly 8% while Chipotle has raised prices by 7.5%, according to data from Kalinowski Equity Research and cited in The New York Post.
Taco Bell raised menu prices by 3% and Burger King hiked prices by 2%, the report found.
Seattle-based Starbucks increased prices by about 7% in California.

I don’t know where they’re getting that Chipotle raise prices by 7.5% since my uncle who lives in Cali and is an owner of more than a dozen Chipotles just told my dad that he’s raising his prices 10% June 1st. He’s already raised them 5%. He charged his unit managers with identifying the two to three people the store can do without for termination. He’s planning on all the firings for the last week in may. All the menu prices are set to be adjusted shortly and Chipotle as a corporation is devising new weight and volume standards for their products. So basically they’re gonna downsize everything raise the prices and fire a bunch of people. Way to go California I don’t know where you guys went for economics class but you should demand your money back.
Perhaps Mr Brandon meant that his CA uncle works for the Chipotle corporation and is responsible for more than a dozen of the 477 Chipotle corporation sites there. It is unlike Mr Brandon to mislead anyone. It’s fair to ask if any of his uncle’s Chipotles were responsible for the rash of food poisonings in California (see below).
Anyway, today Chipotle is doing well financially, even after their $25 million fine, a result of their 2015-2018 poisonings (norovirus) of a couple thousand Americans. They’ve also had a E. coli and Salmonella outbreaks. I wouldn’t eat there.

So, what is a “health care worker”? Nurses and nursing assistants and phlebotomists and X-Ray techs are almost certainly making more than that already.
But what about janitors and cafeteria workers, or the people who launder the sheets and blankets and towels? That’s where the Pyrite State could see some wage inflation, or hospital employees laid off in favor of contract services to provide those things more cheaply. The contract service workers would probably make less than the workers in those positions in the hospitals, and almost certainly have fewer benefits.
If health care does get hit with increased costs, who pays those costs? You got it: the health insurance companies, which means the healtyh insurance rates will have to increase.
If they start cutting pay for the people who actually provide the skilled medir care in order to pay janitors and old fat security guards more you will very quickly find you no longer have any nurses or techs available to actually provide the care that the doctors order. Doctors do NOT do most of he healthcare work. They oversee it but nurses and techs do the actual work. And nurses/techs are generally fairly intelligent. Smart enough to find other types of work if they start seeing pay cuts.

We should work to reduce the poverty rates in red states. Why do you oppose that? Shouldn’t we want more states to have the advantages of blue states?
Blue states tend to have greater industrialization, higher rates of education, higher taxes, higher rates of unionizaition, higher pay, better healthcare, more balanced income distribution etc.

The purpose was to show that the 100k/state number is drastically impacted by the city vs country numbers. Again, TN’s metro/city numbers are 35287 vs country numbers of 2962. That’s about 12.5 times worse.
CO follows along, 2000 vs around 1000.
Fl is around 80000 vs 2000, city vs county.
The cities are Democratically governed. You can’t lump the numbers together to get a meaningful result.

Arkansas city metro is 12317 vs country side 2058. Again Democrat controlled.
CA metro is 170,193 vs 3500. Arkansas is 6 to 1. CA is like 50 to 1.
