Niger Lets Russian Troops Into Air Base Holding US Forces

Just another fine example of Biden failing on the world stage, putting America into an embarrassing situations

Russian troops enter base housing US military in Niger, US official says

Joe Biden Ice Cream AfghanistanRussian military personnel have entered an air base in Niger that is hosting U.S. troops, a senior U.S. defense official told Reuters, a move that follows a decision by Niger’s junta to expel U.S. forces.

The military officers ruling the West African nation have told the U.S. to withdraw its nearly 1,000 military personnel from the country, which until a coup last year had been a key partner for Washington’s fight against insurgents who have killed thousands of people and displaced millions more.

A senior U.S. defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Russian forces were not mingling with U.S. troops but were using a separate hangar at Airbase 101, which is next to Diori Hamani International Airport in Niamey, Niger’s capital.

The move by Russia’s military, which Reuters was the first to report, puts U.S. and Russian troops in close proximity at a time when the nations’ military and diplomatic rivalry is increasingly acrimonious over the conflict in Ukraine.

It also raises questions about the fate of U.S. installations in the country following a withdrawal.

Hopefully, this withdrawal won’t be as bad as Biden’s Afghanistan withdrawal. And we should be taking everything from both bases, which we spent quite a bit of taxpayer money on, or destroying it to deny the Russians and Nigerians.

Remind me, didn’t Obama pick Biden as his VP because of his “vast foreign experience?” And then Russia took Crimea, Obama blew off the Iranian Green uprising and the Arab Spring, saw the rise of ISIS, turned Libya into a civil war zone full of Islamic extremists, and so much more? And how’s all that working out internationally now? Even though he campaigned on how much better America would be in the world if he won instead of Trump?

But, but, but, we have been told that the Rooskies are on their last legs, and if we just send another million billion to Ukraine, we’ll finish them off!

    • Elwood P. Dowd says:

Mr Dana exaggerates a bit. The Niger covfefe involves Russia’s continuing inroads in Africa. Russia’s economy is selling fossil fuels and military hardware to groups/nations we consider opponents or at least competitors.

Ukraine has invited the help of the US and Europe. The new Niger junta no longer wants US troops in their country.

William Teach “inadvertently” added the statement: “Hopefully, this withdrawal won’t be as bad as Biden’s Afghanistan withdrawal. And we should be taking everything from both bases, which we spent quite a bit of taxpayer money on, or destroying it to deny the Russians and Nigerians”, to the Reuters article.

Base 201 was built during the Trump “America First” regime. Also, the people of Niger are Nigeriens, not Nigerians, who are the people of Nigeria. It’s improbable that Reuters would have made that mistake. But they’re all just nigers to the right…

Is Mr Teach suggesting the US should keep Trump’s troops in Niger?

This is what happens when you piss off the hosting country. The question we should be asking is why is Niger upset with the Biden administration. And in the long haul, we always end up pissing off the host country, because we have a hegemonic Deep State that wants to meddle with other cultures.

The bigger question is why do we even have troops and expensive infrastructure there? Maybe we should mind our own business and stay the hell out of the rest of the world. That includes Ukraine, Europe, Africa, Asia, South America, etc.. If we need to defend ourselves, why aren’t we investing in technology that allows us to act without being in another country? Submarines, aircraft carriers, and satellites can put warheads on foreheads without having bases elsewhere.

    • Elwood P. Dowd says:

As you are no doubt aware, on 26 July 2023, a coup d’etat by the military overthrew President Mohamed Bazoum, and the Commander of the Presidential Guard, General Abdourahamane Tchiani announced himself as the leader of the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland; the de facto head of state. President Bazoum had planned to relieve General Tchiani from his position. The junta, supported by the military, suspended Niger’s constitution.

Ask ex-president “America First” Trump why he kept troops there and built new infrastructure. The US, Turkey and France had/have bases in Niger to combat al-qaeda, Boko Haram* and the Islamic State.

The collection of Western African states (ECOWAS), the UN and the African Union (AU) condemned the coup and imposed sanctions. The U.S. supported the existing government and NOT the junta. The junta announced a 3 year plan to return Niger to civilian control.

The role of Russia in the coup is suspected. The Wagner Group (Russian mercenaries) was on site! Thousands of junta supporters protested near a French military base chanting anti-French slogans and waving Russian flags. Russian military advisers and trainers arrived in Niger April 2024 (last month!). A few Russian troops arrived recently.

Should President Biden have sent troops in to quash the coup? The US could have easily invaded Niger and restored order, re-installing democratically elected President Bazoum.

None of it was any of our business. Why should we care what form of government Niger has? The people of Nig1er are neither our concern nor our problem. Governments change. Anyone with common sense knows that.

Our interference in other countries goes back over a century. It has nothing to do with any one POTUS. It’s a chronic feature of our foreign policies over time. And it needs to end.

        • Elwood P. Dowd says:

Ask William Teach. He brought it up and blames President Biden, per usual.

  5. H says:

“Biden’s Afghan withdrawal”.Nr Teach seems to have forgotten that HE was a super fan of that idiotic invasion and occupation of Afghanistan.
Also that Trump promised to witness our troops but never did. Trump signed a treaty pledging out word to take all of the troops out. Weapons ? After 30 years what was left wasn’t worth taking home other than what we left to Teach’s Afghan “partners” who immediately surrendered Afghanistan is now battling with Iran using the trash we left behind.

Let’s all try to disremember Mr Teach’s battle reports from Afghanistan
We have to fight them over there, we can’t leave they will follow us home
The latest Taliban attacks just how desperate they are because we are winning
We have reached a “tipping point” and are winning
We can see the light at the end of the tunnel

Mr Teach seems to think that the death of Americans just prior to leaving was the worst thing that happened in that 20 year war. You never hear him saying thsthst the do called “left” was correct in their view of that ear/occupation: that it was unwinnable and unnecessary

Spoken like a true terrorist leader H. The blame for everything military goes squarely on the executive branch regardless of who they are. Some were republican and some were Democrat none were perfect all were wrong and to try and fix blame on someone based on their party affiliation is stupid. Of course we’ve come to expect stupid from you.

    • ruralcounsel says:

Getting involved in Afghanistan is one thing. Making a respectable exit is a totally separate issue. Don’t confuse the two.

  6. Professor Hale says:

The lawful government of Niger has demanded that American withdraw their troops from its country. Why are they still there? Waiting for the next CIA coup to install a friendlier regime?

    • Elwood P. Dowd says:

Lawful in the sense that they kicked out the lawful democratically-elected leader and took over the government in a coup?

      • L.G.Brandon!, L.G.Brandon! says:

So did we in 1776. The king was the legal leader and we formed a coup and kicked them out. Again in 1861 this time Democrats tried to overthrow the republican government. Currently Democrats are attempting a coup by depriving their rival party from placing their candidate on the ballot. That’s not only a coup but it’s 35 different illegal illegalities all at once. There are so many things wrong with what is going on in lawfare right now intermingled with our election process and it’s hard to even discuss anything with a clear mind. The left prosecutes anybody and anything that they think will stop them from winning an election. And the Republicans let them. One can only surmise they’re both on the same team and that team is not pro American.

I can scarcely think of anything how foreigner domestic enemy could do to destroy our country that isn’t being done right now.
