The United States has a long had political violence…
In 1804, Vice-President Aaron Burr and 1st Sec of Treasury, Alexander Hamilton had a duel in NJ. Hamilton died the next day of the wound.
BTW, Teddy Roosevelt, shot in the chest, completed his speech! The bullet had gone through his heavy coat, hit a heavy glasses case, AND the thick manuscript of his speech before arresting on a rib!
In 1950, two Puerto Rican nationalists stormed Blair House, where President Truman was staying. One would-be assassin was killed by police, the other captured and sentenced to be executed, but President Truman commuted his sentence to life in prison.
In 2011, US Representative Gabby Giffords (D-AZ) was shot in the head but survived. The shooting killed 6. The killer was sentenced to life in prison. He used a 9mm pistol.
In 2017, Representative Steve Scalise (R-LA) was shot by a 66 year old, left-wing extremist, who was killed at the scene by police. Scalise, receiving a single shot to his left hip, was critically injured, but recovered. The shooter used an SKS 7.62×39 rifle.
