DP, one minor correction. It is NOT the only US oil tanker in teh Middle East. It is the only US GOVERNMENT oil tanker. Specifically, it is the oiler for the US Navy fleet in the area. This ship does not follow most Navy rules because it is operated by Merchant seamen, not US Navy. So it gets used month after month with no rest. No shore time and no long rests for the crew. The Fleet CANNOT operate without it. They will be scrambling to push out a replacement or refloat the stuck one fast. Note: When the Cole was bombed, it was only in port to refuel because one of these ships was not available to refuel it at sea. There is a real operational impact to this and it is a real vulnerability for the whole Navy. Sure, we can send out 4 carrier battle groups, but they run out of gas for their airplanes after the first couple of days.
