Liberal North Carolina city’s DEI plan for hurricane relief shut down by HUD secretary
Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Scott Turner shut down a hurricane relief draft plan put forth by the city of Asheville, North Carolina, that included a diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiative that would have prioritized some residents over others, his office said.
“Once again, let me be clear, DEI is dead at HUD,” Turner said of axing the plan. “We will not provide funding to any program or grantee that does not comply with President Trump’s executive orders.”
“HUD looks forward to helping thousands of North Carolinians rebuild after Hurricane Helene by directing funding assistance to impacted businesses, nonprofit organizations and neighborhoods,” Turner added. “However, Asheville’s draft action plan incorporated DEI criteria to prioritize some impacted residents over others, which was unacceptable. After HUD informed Asheville that its plan was unsatisfactory and it would not be approved, the city assured us that it was updating its draft action plan to be compliant.”
Asheville is about as liberal as you’re going to get in North Carolina. Nice place to visit. Great scenery, funky attitude. But, definitely full of moonbats
The city of Asheville detailed under a section in its draft plan titled “How Programs Will Support Vulnerable Populations” that minority- and women-owned businesses would be prioritized for assistance.
“Within the Small Business Support Program, the City will prioritize assistance for Minority and Women Owned Businesses (MWBE) within the scoring criteria outlined within the policies and procedures,” reads the draft plan, which was reviewed by Fox News Digital.
Asheville is also, as you’d expect in a wholly Democrat run city, crime ridden. Neighborhood Scout ranks it a 2, meaning it is safer than 2% of American cities. That’s bad. Lots of assault, thefts, burglaries, and car thefts. It’s also uber-white, with 78%, and only 10% black and 6% Hispanic. So, why a focus on “minorities”? How about helping everyone? Of course, if the uber-white liberals want to give their aid up to the minorities, have at it.
Democratic Asheville Mayor Esther Manheimer said in comments provided to Fox News Digital that the city was “working closely with HUD as we continue to navigate the changing compliance requirements of the new administration.”
“We are grateful for the administration’s support in our recovery efforts,” Manheimer continued. “The City will ensure it meets current federal standards in order to facilitate approval of critically needed funding to help the city recover from the devastation of Tropical Storm Helene.”
In other words, they capitulate, and removed the above section as well as other DEI. Don’t think for a moment they won’t try and backdoor it.
Why would any MAGAt live in an urban area?? Makes no sense. Godawful crime-ridden, filthy liberal cities like Raleigh NC, St Louis MO, Lexington KY… usually it’s for the convenience – nearby grocery stores, health care facilities, jobs, education, jobs, entertainment, jobs, etc.

In my small county, President Trump beat Vice President Emhoff 5,091 (80.94%) to 1,114 (17.71%). Mr Trump carried 118 out of 120 counties in the Bluegrass State, losing only Jefferson (Louisville) and Fayette (Lexington), and even in the two counties she won, Mrs Emhoff took only 57.09% and 57.93%, respectively.
Yeah, we do have to drive to Richmond for a better grocery selection and the hospital here is a small one; no surgeries are performed there. We have only the county public schools. But we also don’t have the murders or the rapes here.
May of 2023 saw the Democratic primary for mayor in the City of Brotherly Love, with some very interesting results. The two most liberal candidates, Rebecca Rhynhart McDuff (white) and Helen Gym Flaherty (Asian) finished 2nd and third, and they had their greatest strength in the wealthier, whiter areas of the city, the areas less touched by the crime in Philly, while the winner, Cherelle Parker Mullins (black), who ran on fighting crime, won in the poorer, blacker areas. Was it because she is black, or was it because she promised to increase police presence, bring back stop-and-frisk, and be harder on criminals?
University City, around the University of Pennsylvania, went heavily for Mrs Flaherty, the socialist who was also supported by the far-left Working Families Party. The very liberal, but more mature populations in wealthy white areas like Rittenhouse Square and Chestnut Hill, went for Mrs McDuff.
Philly is our nation’s second most internally segregated big city, which makes those neighborhood results more obvious.
IIRC, our good friend from St Louis County lives in the same area (subdivision?) as Patricia and Mark McCloskey, the smart couple who were prepared to defend their home from the wild-eyed idiots protesting the unfortunate death while resisting arrest of a fentanyl-and-methamphetamine addled previously convicted felon caught passing counterfeit money. If that’s where the distinguished Mr Dowd lives, then it’s easy for him to vote for liberals, because the “Godawful crime-ridden, filthy liberal” city is far enough away from his humble abode that, like the lefties in University City, he can feel safe.
The ambulance-chasing attorneys, the McCloskey’s, live in a mansion in a gated community within the city of St. Louis. Protesters walked past their property to protest at the home of then St Louis Mayor Lyda Krewson, who had earlier publicized the names and addresses of constituents, including at least one minor, who had signed a petition to transfer police funding to social services. Our modest abode is just outside the city limits.
Mr and Mrs M plea-bargained their felonious flourishing firearms charges to misdemeanors and then-governor Parsnips pardoned them. Threatening black people is celebrated in Missouri, especially with an AR-15! Mark M parlayed his notoriety by running for the US Senate but was soundly beaten by my pen-pal now-Sen Eric Schmitt!!

Matt Van Swol (@Matt_vanswol on Twitter) has been doing a lot of work, since last fall, on the utter neglect TEMA showed to western Carolina while the dummkopf from Delaware was in office, to the immediate surge of help following January 20th.
To me, this shows just how deeply in dementia Joe Biden was. Yeah, he had gone completely around the bend on leftism, but he was always a savvy politician, and if he was lucid, he had to have known that North Carolina was a critical state for the crackpot from California, and he would never have neglected North Carolina the way FEMA did, if he was actually in charge and still had all his marbles.
The neglect was the work of his minions, whom I would guess thought of Carolina as just a bunch of rednecks and hillbillies, and who gives a f(ornicate) about them? Vice President Emhoff should have been just as concerned as Mr Biden would have been, had he known, because she needed votes, but her administrative skills were perfectly on display as she did nothing to push for FEMA efforts in western Carolina.
