This isn’t so much climahypocrisy, as abject stupidity and wimpiness (yeah, I did mention this story during the Patriotic Pinup post, but, too good to sit on) Barack Obama: ‘no’ to solar panels on the White House roof
A quest to get Barack Obama to shout his commitment to solar power from the roof tops – by re-installing vintage solar panels at the White House – ended in disappointment for environmental campaigners today.
Bill McKibben, the founder of 350.org, had led a group of environmental activists to Washington in a bio-diesel van hoping to persuade Obama to re-install a set of solar panels originally put up by Jimmy Carter.
Granted, the things are heavy and way, way, way outdated, but…..
A California company Sungevity had offered to equip the White House with the latest technology.
The White House said “thanks, but, no thanks.” (hey, I’ll take them) I wonder why?
But the White House declined – twitchy perhaps about inviting any comparison to one-term Democratic president Carter in the run-up to the very difficult mid-term elections in November. The White House did send three staffers to meet the campaigners.
Carter put them on the roof and actually used them to heat water for the WH staff mess, in order to try and push America to reduce our use of foreign oil, not for climate alarmism. This was actually a good idea, I personally cannot fault Carter. A good idea is a good idea. But, apparently Obama just can’t be bothered to practice what he preaches. Maybe he’s worried that they won’t provide enough electricity to heat the White House to absurd levels if this winter is similar to last years?
Oh, and hey, remember when he and the media made a big deal out of his visit to a solar panel plant? And how he’s dumping billions into solar panel manufacturing?
Barry is more of a “Do as I say” than a “Do as I do” kind of President.
And boxer and company put an End to any chances for 10 different solar power sites to be built in the California desert, not more than two months ago.
Seems like NO power is the best power source, for leftists.

I’m still serving my deportation to the State of California. I live in the San Francisco Bay area. There’s a TV commercial making the rounds touting solar panels that makes the assertion that a Berkeley (what else) couple installed the panels and that that addition raised the value of their property so much that the panels were, in effect, paid for on installation. No economists need apply. Real money, imaginary money, it’s all the same. It’s all imaginary.
11B40: I don’t think Berzerkley deals in cash (or reality), it was probably measured in Carbon Credits.
I don’t think that the White House should have them just because of the esthetics that are involved. Likewise covering the Washington Memorial on its south face, with panels. Also most panels have a useful life span these would be 35 years old.
Why am I not surprised you find a way to spin Obama out of this mess? You do understand that the panels would be put on the roof, right? And that a company, as noted, has offered new ones? The old ones didn’t look bad when they were up, but, we understand you have to do your best to protect this unmitigated disaster of a president however you can, even if it makes absolutely no sense.
No one is talking about covering the south face of the Washington Memorial. But, Obama is talking about drastically increasing the use of solar panels, apparently just for everyone else.
This story actually shows just how tone deaf and self-absorbed Obama actually is. It would have been the simplest of gestures to put the panels up, but, he just couldn’t be bothered.
IF you read other sources, what you find is that the group wanted to put one of the old panels up as some sort of a nod to history and then a company was offering state of the art panels for the roof. It was a combination of the historical panel and the new panels that the group wanted.
I can understand the White House turning down the old panel. There is no reason for them to turn the new panels down other then their hypocrisy in saying “what is good for the peons is not good enough for us.”
Remember, this is the same White House that was telling people to turn their thermostats down while keeping the temp in the White House up because Obama likes it that way.
It is sheer hypocrisy – nothing else. Incidents like this continue to prove that Obama does not have the ability to lead. It just isn’t in him to say or act in a manner that says “follow me!”
Do as I say, not as I do.
Period.
And by the way, I can travel about the country as I like, You Peons, sit home and take it.
Similar to all liberals, the double standard rules the day.
But, I would honestly be terribly disturbed by any alterations that made the Whitehouse “green” It’s ridiculous to destroy the integrity of the Whitehouse for ANY reason.
Pretty sure that is how most environmentalists think about their properties. (plural- most of the big mouth eco’s have MORE than one resident)

There is one good reason not to put the panels up.
If the design or placement would interfere with defensive measures in place on the roof of the White House, then it is understandable not to put them up.
And of course it would be difficult to say that because if you tell people what is on the roof, or even IF there is something on the roof, that aids an attacker.
The reason I mention this is that after 9/11, the White House installed new countermeasures to protect the White House. No one is really sure what those measures are, but we do know there are some counter measures and security on the roof.
Could Obama have said that? I don’t know. I really don’t know if his mentioning security measures on the White House would have hurt anything. I do believe, however, that he could have had them installed on Blair House or the VP’s home at the Naval Observatory.
He had a chance to make a statement on energy and didn’t. Even with the caveat of “counter measures” on the White House roof, he still chose to lead by not leading at all.
gitarcarver, he could have also said that he would consider it. he would look in to it to see how it would fit with what is already “installed” there.
He could have said he would put them up in the garden. He could have done alot of things to PR the event. But, he just said..NO!
And Otter, don’t forget the ones in New Mexico and Arizona that were denied as well. Protected lands or something. Greenies vs Greenies.
I don’t think those solar towers would have worked anyway.
We wouldn’t be having these problems if nuclear was allowed to take off and continue as it was predicted to.
