WTW: Don’t Like It? Tough

We now have our own little controversy over Christmas here in Raleigh

Image hosting by Photobucket Everyone celebrates religion and holidays in their own individual ways, but currently there are questions about whether the two should be more connected. One of the latest places involved in the controversy is a McDonald’s restaurant in Raleigh. (click for bigger picture)

The sign at McDonald’s on the corner of Falls of Neuse and Spring Forest Road reads: “Merry Christmas, Jesus is the Reason for the Season.” It is a holiday message that Amanda Alpert thinks comes on a little too strongly.

“It offends me because it specifically talks about Jesus, Merry Christmas. It doesn’t give credit to anyone else,” Alpert said.

Tough. Christmas is about Jesus Christ. Furthermore, as McDonald’s has stated, it is a privately owned franchise store. They can do what they want, within reason. This is within reason.

Update: Teach adds: Take a look at the survey at WRAL. Of over 10,000 respondants, approx 97% say that having a religious message on a business’ sign is OK. Now, Wake County votes Democratic, as do Orange and Durham, which are within WRAL’s sphere. Many other counties South and East are not “blue” counties. To get 97% is pretty good, though, still not scientific.
