    if 5% of the area of the Sahara was covered in solar panels it would provide the entire amount of energy that the Earth now uses. And the cost of solar just keeps dropping, so sad for the coldists who believe that only fossil fuel use can save us from anothjer ice age

    hey john.. not true.. and if it was, how long would it last from being sandblasted, and how would you get the power outside of the sahara? what happens to the US in the day time when the sahara is in dark?

    Try using one of the few brain cells you were born with.

    5% of the Sahara, OMG! Hey John, try performing a simple math calculation of solar megawatts/sq. mile (or whatever units you like) and compare that to the energy needs of, say, California. Then come back. It’s so easy, even a 5th grader could do it.

    Hey John, since you mentioned cost, I calculated the cost of your Sahara desert project based on U.S. Dept. Interior solar energy plan numbers. To cover 5% of the Sahara with solar PV arrays would cost 102 trillion dollars. And you know how well the gov’t estimates project costs. It will be double that, at least. Since the global gross world product is $70 trillion, we would take all the money from all the people in the world for 3 years to build the project. But hey, we can just make the rich pay for it, right?

    Actually John, that’s a great idea! We could build wind mill turbines to blow the sand storms away from the solar panels. There-by, producing more electricity and keeping the panels from premature erosion. Power lines across the Atlantic shouldn’t be a problem… cut down really tall redwood trees to make power poles! I guess the only problem would be the ships and submarines getting tangled in the power lines and running into the poles. Maybe we could just mine the coal here in the USA which we have about 50 lifetimes worth that is being shut-down bb Prez. Obummer.
