Iowa To Divest From Sudan

Via US Newswire

Today, Iowa Governor Chet Culver signed Senate File 361, a targeted divestment bill requiring the state to divest from companies that support the government of Sudan, which has been accused of genocide by the United States Government. The bill passed the House with overwhelming support and passed the Senate with unanimous consent late last month.

In the Darfur region of Africa's largest country, Sudan, the government has attempted to eliminate its non-Arab population. In a historic move, the United States government declared the crisis in Darfur to be genocide, marking the first time the U.S. government has taken such action while a massacre was still occurring. To date, over 400,000 have been killed and over 2.5 million have been displaced. Recently, former United Nations Undersecretary Jan Egeland stated, "It's going from real bad to catastrophic in Darfur."

While I applaud Iowa for saying they will not support Sudan, if you read the whole news release, you will notice something missing. There is no mention of what groups are the ones involved in causing the genocide. I'll leave it to you to figure out which one.
