Morning, y’all, Jebediah Murphy here with a bit of that old truth thang, which is more then I can say for Thomas Freidman at the old NY Traitor Times. He has a bit of typical liberal leftard seething in an article entitled “Remembering Iraq”
Boy, am I glad we finally got out of Iraq. It was so painful waking up every morning and reading the news from there. It’s just such a relief to have it out of mind and behind us.
Huh? Say what? You say we’re still there? But how could that be — nobody in Washington is talking about it anymore?
That would actually be because there is lots of good news coming out of Iraq, Tom, and your insanocrat buddies do not want it broadcast. Also, the Democrat Party has, at least for the moment, surrendered to the point that they are not offering any more retreat and defeat bills.
I don’t know whether it was the sheer agony of the debate over Gen. David Petraeus’s testimony, or the fact that the surge really has dampened casualties, or the failure by Democrats to force an Iraq withdrawal through Congress, or the fact that all the leading Democratic presidential contenders have signaled that they will not precipitously withdraw U.S. forces from Iraq, but the air has gone out of the Iraq debate.
Amazing. He does know, and is honest about it. But don’t get your hopes up about the rest being sane!
That is too bad. Neglect is not benign when it comes to Iraq — because Iraq is not healthy. Iraq is like a cancer patient who was also running a high fever from an infection (Al Qaeda in Mesopotamia). The military surge has brought down the fever, but the patient still has cancer (civil war). And we still don’t know how to treat it. Surgery? Chemotherapy? Natural healers? Euthanasia?
Cancer patients recover, Tommy boy. Said “civil war,” which never really seemed to break out, has eroded to the point that Osama (not to be confused with Obama) released a tape asking Iraqi’s to fight on. Will euthanasia be the new word used to replace “redeployment?”
To the extent that the surge has worked militarily, it is largely because of what Iraqis have done by themselves for themselves — Iraqi Sunni tribal leaders rising up against pro-Qaeda Sunni elements, taking back control of their villages and towns, and aligning themselves with U.S. forces to do so. Some Shiites are now doing the same.
Anything good that is happening has nothing to do with the US military in Tom’s world. Isn’t that nice. Can we question his support of the troops now?
I will agree with his assessment regarding the political progress, which has been slight, but, hey let’s be honest: he could easily have been talking about our own Congress
So far, though, too many of Iraq’s leaders continue to act their part — looking out for themselves, their clans, their hometowns, their militias and their sects, and using the Iraqi treasury and ministries as looting grounds for personal or sectarian gains.
It still feels to me as if we’ve made Iraq just safe enough for its politicians to be obstinate, corrupt or reckless on our dime.
Just substitute the word America for Iraq, and you will have a picture of the Democrat led Congress.
As a result, what you have today is more of a spotty truce, with U.S. soldiers still caught in the middle. That is a quiet strategy, not an exit strategy.
Glad to know you are part of the Bush admin’s inner circle, privy to the actual war plans, Tom. Huh? Say what? You say you aren’t, and have no knowledge of what we plan on doing there? But how could that be? You make predictions like you are.
If we’re going to just forget about Iraq, let’s do it when we’re gone — not when we’re still there.
Alert your buddies in the media about that, Tom, including your own paper, who rarely ever prints a positive word about what is going on in Iraq or Afghanistan. The Grey Lady failed to mention the drop in violence in Iraq yesterday, instead posting many, many articles and editorials suggesting it is getting worse.
Alert your buddies in the Democrat Party, who only want to talk about doom and gloom, not the good things being done, so have few talking points at the moment. Alert John Murtha, who has kept his yap shut since all the Marines in the Haditha case have been exhonerated of murder charges, and Murtha himelf has several lawsuits pending over his defamatory comments.
Alert your Nutroots buddies, who will only talk about defeat and retreat.
And alert yourself, Tom. Try looking at the good things we have done for a change.

Well all would agree that lower death rates are good. However it may not be agreed to by all that the “surge” is the one reason that they have dropped. Most US casualties were not caused by Al Qaeda but from the Sunni and Shia insurgents., primarily Shia. In fact the death rate has also dropped for the insurgents by about 25% in September vs August.http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/7021692.stm
I think that the call for a ceasefire by Sadr has played a large part in the total reduction of deaths.
