There might actually be a point to this, especially as we see so many white, upper middle class and white, rich celebs and politicians push for gun control
Never Again: Is gun control movement too white?
Is the new movement against gun violence that is sweeping America too white and too rich?
It’s a question hotly debated on social media as hundreds of thousands rallied on Saturday in support of the #NeverAgain campaign that emerged after 17 people were killed in a gun attack at a high school in Parkland, Florida, last month.
Protesters are being accused of hypocrisy, as some ask why they didn’t turn out for the Black Lives Matter movement, which was set up in 2013 to end police violence against black people and highlight the impact of gun violence in ethnic minority communities.
In 2016Â more than 52% of murder victims (73% killed by guns) in America were black, even though black people make up 13% of the population.
What author Georgina Rannard (who is herself pretty pasty white) forgets to mention is that almost 100% of those Blacks murdered were murdered by Blacks, in the cases where we have info on the murderer.
Debate on Twitter focused on a photograph of white protesters holding up their palms, which read: “Don’t shoot.” The slogan and gesture became a rallying cry in 2014 after 18-year-old Michael Brown, who was reported to be raising his arms, was fatally shot by a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri.
Accusations that the weekend marches had appropriated the slogan were shared more than 3,000 times.
I’m having a hard time figuring out whether Georgina is pro-too white or anti-too white. Maybe she’s just reporting? In this day and age of an activist press, that would be something, eh?
Race was also the subject of signs posted online with the Black Lives Matter hashtag.
They’ll be happy when a good guy with a gun who happens to be white saves their butts one day in their violent neighborhoods.
Some critics suggested that Never Again has attracted so much attention because of the race and economic background of its founders, who are students at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school in Parkland.
“The Never Again movement has been spearheaded by white teens – that’s why it’s garnered so much attention,” tweeted @gideonsvid.
“Families of black victims called for an end to violence, but that did not receive widespread media coverage. Black victims, whether victims of neighbourhood violence or otherwise, have not received the support that white victims have received,” said one Instagram user, referring to a picture of a man holding a sign reading: “Black students matter.”
So the leftwing media is racist? Huh. Perhaps it could be other factors, such as whites being much larger in terms of population. Maybe it’s because there hasn’t been looting, arson, rioting, property damage, and violence associated with this #NeverAgain movement, just littering and lots of yelling, unlike what we saw with #BlackLivesMatter.
It’s not surprising that America is more concerned with several white kids getting shot in mass shootings than 8000 Black people getting shot by Black guys. Whether true or not, the general view is that most Black men getting shot had it coming, e.g., in drug wars in cities, while kids in school are innocent.
Thankfully only a small percentage of homicides each year result from mass shootings. But it’s also true that mass shootings are more traumatic to society at large than day to day homicides.
So now the nignorant angry little black fella is for banning guns to the law abiding black folks, yo?
Lordie!!!
You do realize that the leading cause of death in young black males is young black males, but all your overlords aren’t interested in changing tha.
Neither are you, apparently.
Actually, what
JeffreyJeffery wrote is quite true: other than their families, nobody cares when young black men are killed by other young black men. It barely rates a paragraph, if even that much, in The Philadelphia Inquirer, the determining factor of that paragraph depending upon at what time in the news cycle the killing occurred. But if any of this fine site’s readers are from near foul, fetid, fuming, foggy, filthy Philadelphia, they might remember how the local media reacted when cute little white girl Rian Thal got mixed up in the drug trade, and took an unscheduled trip to Hell in a drug deal gone bad:
Let me be blunt here: the lovely Miss Thal, from a well-to-do white suburban family, got mixed up in the heavily-black cocaine trade, and it cost her her life. She chose, apparently willingly, to enter that part of the black urban subculture, and that exposed her to the risks of that culture. It was a media sensation precisely because she was white and cute; had she been black, there’d hardly have been more than a paragraph.
The Democratic leadership in our urban areas say little, if anything, about black-on-black killings, because silence is preferable to alienating the black voters which put them in power. To criticize the culture which leads to this carnage is to criticize the black community as a whole, and this cannot be done. When the Inquirer doesn’t report on it, my question has always been: is it because such crimes are not newsworthy, or is it because reporting on such is seen as criticism of the black community? Sad thing is, it’s probably both.
And of course, most ammosexual gun nuts are white males with an oversized fear that Black or Muslim or Mexican men are going to hurt them. A gun restores their lost manhood.
And of course, most climate change nuts are white males with an oversized fear that a trace gas necessary for life is going to hurt them. A carbon tax would restore their manhood and make them feel worthwhile.
Let’s go back and look at who commits the most violent crimes, shall we?
Then realize 3/4 of black households have a firearm.
Lessee now, large crime rate, large gun ownership; wow, I guess black males are ammosexuals, too.
Projection is a funny thing.
What-no marches for all the blacks shot everyday in democratic run cities? Liberals obviously only care for white folk.
The Rahms and Dr Evils want blacks killing each other. American blacks don’t want to move to Mexico.
No need to look at the historical roots of gun control in the USA being tied to oppression of the black population. Ignorance is intelligence. Weakness is strength.
