This is a country that hurtles from winter chill to summer desiccation in roughly the time it takes Iraqis to brew their national beverage – a glassful of sugar dissolved in two teaspoons of tea.
While it lasts it is pleasant. Tiny frogs hop through the grass; women’s triple-layer winter veils give way to spring-collection pink and turquoise; and P.K.K. guerrillas rise yawning from their hibernation in Kurdish mountain hideouts, worrying that the winter melt will bring a valleyful of Turkish soldiers through the rocky passes.
The guy who wrote that April is the cruelest month was talking stony rubbish, at least as regards Mesopotamia. It is when April passes into May, June and July that Iraq reaches its murderous midsummer worst.
Sunscreen is useless. Protection Factor 30 is about as much use against a Kalashnikov, while Baghdad is made even hotter by the endless miles of concrete blast walls, which turn into satanic radiators, blocking wind and scorching any flesh rash enough to come within a foot.
