I am not sure that I am willing to call this a “hoax,” at least initially.
When the Wallace story hit, knowing the security at the tracks / garages, my first thought was “how did that happen without the thing being caught on security cameras?”
As for Wallace, he was initially told the thing was noose by his crew. I don’t think it is right to blame Wallace for what he was told initially.
In his post below, Teach says nooses are in all of the garages. Some sort of pulldown rope is in every garage. Not all are nooses and there is a dispute as to whether any other garage had a noose.
Teach makes the excellent point that nooses move – they tighten or loosen. This is most likely something like a bowline with wrappings as is common on static lines on docks.
That being said, Wallace’s reiteration that this was aimed at him, that it was noose reminiscent of hanging people is way off the mark. The FBI uses the term “noose,” but that is in style and not in function.
It is not Wallace’s fault that he was told it was a noose. It is his fault that he, and others, are continuing to put forth the narrative that is false.
NASCAR is investigating to see who made the pulldown in October, 2019. Until then, they are being silent. The car owner, Richard Petty, who made strong statements on the idea it was noose, is now silent. Most of the other drivers are silent as well.
What’s the old saying? “A lie is halfway around the world before the truth even gets out of bed.”
