Dr. Smith has been touting the effectiveness of HCQ on FOX News for over a year. Poorly designed studies have shown a benefit, well-designed studies show no benefit.
MedRxiv is not peer reviewed but rather a holding site for early papers. It was an observational study, considered second class for pharmaceutical studies, but can be of some value, but are inferior to randomized, placebo controlled, double-blind trial. The most significant problem with observational study is the lack of randomization. Is it possible that healthier patients received drug treatments compared to the those not receiving drugs?
Usually authors eventually submit MedRxiv manuscripts to peer-reviewed journals. They reviewed records of 255 ventilated Covid patients, 54 of whom survived (21.2%). Of the 255 only 30 did NOT receive HCQ alone or in combination with azithromycin and or dexamethasone.
Peer-reviewed, randomized, prospective treatment studies have shown no significant benefit of HCQ in the treatment of Covid.
