Tonga Eruption Put Huge Amount Of Water Vapor In Atmosphere, Which Is, Surprisingly, A Greenhouse Gas

In fact, water vapor is the number one greenhouse gas

Tonga eruption blasted enough water to fill 58,000 Olympic pools into the Earth’s atmosphere, NASA says

One of the most powerful volcanic eruptions on the planet blasted such a massive amount of water vapor high into the atmosphere that it’s likely to temporarily warm the Earth’s surface, according to detections from a NASA satellite.

When the undersea Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano erupted on January 15, 40 miles (65 kilometers) north of Tonga’s capital, it created a tsunami as well as a sonic boom that rippled around the world — twice.

The eruption sent a tall plume of water vapor into the stratosphere, which is located between 8 and 33 miles (12 and 53 kilometers) above the Earth’s surface. It was enough water to fill 58,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools, according to detections from a NASA satellite.

They estimate that the eruption delivered 146 teragrams of water to the stratosphere. One teragram is the equivalent of a trillion grams, and in this case, it was equal to 10% of the water already present in the stratosphere.

Hmm, that couldn’t have anything to do with causing a lot of sustained heat in the norther hemisphere and a lot of really wet weather in the southern at the moment, could it?

Typically, powerful volcanic eruptions like Mount Pinatubo or the 1883 Krakatoa event in Indonesia cool Earth’s surface temperature because the gas, dust and ash they spew reflects sunlight into space. This “volcanic winter” happened after the Mount Tambora eruption in 1815, triggering “the year without a summer” in 1816.

The Tonga eruption was different because the water vapor it sent into the atmosphere can trap heat, which could cause warmer surface temperatures. The excess water vapor could stay in the stratosphere for several years, according to the researchers.

The hell you say! Of course, CNN, being the good little climate cult news organization they are looks to dispel the effect

Fortunately, the warming effect of the water vapor is expected to be small and temporary, and will dissipate as the extra vapor diminishes. The researchers don’t believe it will be enough to exacerbate existing conditions due to the climate crisis.

Teach Do you think it also somehow affected the global warming BEFORE Jan 15th?
So far 2022 is ranking 6th hottest year on record. Individual records are anomalies, more important is the long term trend.

  2. Hairy says:

Teach to avoid embarrassment before jumping on any data that you “want” to believe, look at tge big picture.

RECENT TONGA VOLCANIC ACTIVITY WILL NOT COOL CLIMATE BY MUCH
    Total COOLING effect only .004C

  3. Elwood P. Dowd says:

If only there was some physical process to transfer water vapor from the atmosphere to the ground, lakes, rivers and oceans!!

  4. Elwood P. Dowd says:

While deniers view this spewing of water vapor into the stratosphere as great news, it’s actually bad news for the Earth!

This eruption added less cooling ash and sulfur dioxide and more warming water vapor than most volcanic eruptions and will ADD to the current bout of global warming.

We understand that deniers such as Teach and others will use this event to claim ALL global warming is natural. With deniers it’s all politics, all the time!

The irony is thick – and totally lost on Jeffty.

Nice try, but no. Your determination to display your complete lack of self-awareness is admirable, but you can stop now.

    • James Lewis says:

      Dear Elwood:

Actually water vapor is an …..effect….. not a cause. Or at least that’s what NASA says.

“Some people mistakenly believe water vapor is the main driver of Earth’s current warming. But increased water vapor doesn’t cause global warming. Instead, it’s a consequence of it. Increased water vapor in the atmosphere supercharges the warming caused by other greenhouse gases.”

      • Elwood P. Dowd says:

        James,

        Yes, and?

Deniers always ask but… but… What about water vapor??

      • alanstorm says:

The first 2 lines in the referenced article:

Water vapor is Earth’s most abundant greenhouse gas. It’s responsible for about half of Earth’s greenhouse effect — the process that occurs when gases in Earth’s atmosphere trap the Sun’s heat.

So is it a dessert topping, or a floor wax?

        • Elwood P. Dowd says:

Hmmmm. Have long term increases in atmospheric water vapor kept track with long term increases in mean surface temperature?

The point made is that atmospheric water vapor content varies regionally and temporally. Why? Because water vapor coalesces into larger and larger “particles” and falls to Earth! And then evaporates into the atmosphere. Rinse and repeat.

NASA also states: Water vapor is also the most important greenhouse gas in the atmosphere.

          True dat!!

The importance of CO2 is in its INCREASE with time, causing warming. Plus, warmer air can hold more water vapor – a potential positive feedback loop.

So, Mother Gaia is killing Mother Gaia?

I’m sure that somehow, some way, this is all the fault of:

    1 – Donald Trump;
    3 – Ron DeSantis;
    2 – Clarence Thomas; and
    5 – Mitch McConnell.

Since I voted for Mr McConnell, both in 1984 when he won his first election to the Senate, and 2020, his most recent, I guess that it’s my fault, too!

  6. H says:

Of course the process of removing that water vapor takes time like 12 months or so.
That means that 1/2 the time may already have already passed.
Lol no Dana, that “fault” can only be blamed on the physics of the universe, not any individuals. Of course YOU do have the right to place blame on individuals only if it will make you feel better about being……. yourself

  7. Jl says:

Too funny,J. The only denying going on is the cult not being able to show evidence that this warming is somehow dire. You guys stop at “it’s warming!”. I wonder why…

  8. H says:

    Jl
Dire? Well not in the short term, especially if you are elderly and well off and narcisstic
Teach’s “miniscule” temp rise has decimated his NJ lobster harvest because the eggs which float tobtge surface can only hatch within a narrow temp range. Dire? Well maybe not so much. But certainly regrettable.
No more playing hockey in MA on pond ice like I did? OK not dire but again regrettable. These things have happened within my pitifully short lifespan. Change is happening and the rate if temp change dy/dx is also increasing. Jl I have no doubt thst for you for your remaining existence the consequences of climate change will be less than “dire” for yku. I guess that is all that matters

      John,
No one has said that the weather changes, it gets cold and other times hot. You and the others in your myth over carbon feel that it is the only thing and that it is caused by man and specifically the people of Europe and the US. The one and only way to stop the carbon god is to destroy the US, this despite the fact that others in the carbon religion acknowledge that our restrictions on carbon will have little influence.

We have begged you and Jeff to give us information about carbon actually causing warming, but to date nothing. Yes carbon absorbs IFR, but then releases and numerous studies have indicated no influence. Then you have all sorts of correlation of carbon and warming, but they actually do no correlate.

Note that the members of the carbon myth do not feel recapture of carbon does anything also they think that only man produces carbon and you and Jeff throw a fit when we mention natural sources of co2.

So all you are doing is making a cases for global communism, which will not happen.

      • L.G.Brandon!, L.G.Brandon! says:

“So all you are doing is making a cases for global communism, which will not happen.”

Don’t bet on it. How many times over the last several years we we shown it actually can happen here and IS. Just look at the mess the left has made of the major American cities and tell me communism will not happen here. Just look at the insane Miss Dowd and Hairy comment weekly and tell me the commies aren’t in charge.

My former Chief told me today the dems in his district are already importing “ballots” for November.

    • Jl says:

Again, Johnny-those are correlations, not evidence of causation, which is needed. But, as asked many times in the past, please show evidence that those events were caused by a slight increase in the temperature, and show that they didn’t happen before with lower CO2. This should be easy to do, correct? And no, the rate of increase doesn’t match earlier rate increases in the Holocene.
