There is an interesting piece making the rounds of the internet(s) for the Left. Goes something like this:
While talking with audience participants, the president met Mary Mornin, a woman in her late fifties who told the president she was a divorced mother of three, including a ‘mentally challenged’ son.
The President comforted Mornin on the security of social security stating that ‘the promises made will be kept by the government.’
But without prompting Mornin began to elaborate on her life circumstances.
Begin transcript:
MS. MORNIN: That’s good, because I work three jobs and I feel like I contribute.
THE PRESIDENT: You work three jobs?
MS. MORNIN: Three jobs, yes.
THE PRESIDENT: Uniquely American, isn’t it? I mean, that is fantastic that you’re doing that. (Applause.) Get any sleep? (Laughter.)
OK, I’ll admit is a strange comment. Would have to ask W what went through his mind at that one. This came from Prison Planet. It was showing up on the DU earlier, but, seems to be archived. Several other Leftist blogs had. No more sitemeter stats for them from me though. Even Drudge got the short version. They all excerpted a wee bit too much from the full exchange:
Mary is with us. Mary Mornin. How are you, Mary?
MS. MORNIN: I’m fine.
THE PRESIDENT: Good. Okay, Mary, tell us about yourself.
MS. MORNIN: Okay, I’m a divorced, single mother with three grown, adult children. I have one child, Robbie, who is mentally challenged, and I have two daughters.
THE PRESIDENT: Fantastic. First of all, you’ve got the hardest job in America, being a single mom.
MS. MORNIN: Thank you. (Applause.)
THE PRESIDENT: You and I are baby boomers.
MS. MORNIN: Yes, and I am concerned about — that the system stays the same for me.
THE PRESIDENT: Right.
MS. MORNIN: But I do want to see change and reform for my children because I realize that we will be in trouble down the road.
THE PRESIDENT: It’s an interesting point, and I hear this a lot — will the system be the same for me? And the answer is, absolutely. One of the things we have to continue to clarify to people who have retired or near retirement — you fall in the near retirement.
MS. MORNIN: Yes, unfortunately, yes. (Laughter.)
THE PRESIDENT: Well, I don’t know. I’m not going to tell your age, but you’re one year younger than me, and I’m just getting started. (Laughter.)
MS. MORNIN: Okay, okay.
THE PRESIDENT: I feel great, don’t you?
MS. MORNIN: Yes, I do.
THE PRESIDENT: I remember when I turned 50, I used to think 50 was really old. Now I think it’s young, and getting ready to turn 60 here in a couple of years, and I still feel young. I mean, we are living longer, and people are working longer, and the truth of the matter is, elderly baby boomers have got a lot to offer to our society, and we shouldn’t think about giving up our responsibilities in society. (Applause.) Isn’t that right?
MS. MORNIN: That’s right.
THE PRESIDENT: Yes, but nevertheless, there’s a certain comfort to know that the promises made will be kept by the government.
MS. MORNIN: Yes.
THE PRESIDENT: And so thank you for asking that. You don’t have to worry.
MS. MORNIN: That’s good, because I work three jobs and I feel like I contribute.
THE PRESIDENT: You work three jobs?

THE PRESIDENT: Well, hopefully, this will help you get you sleep to know that when we talk about Social Security, nothing changes.
MS. MORNIN: Okay, thank you.
THE PRESIDENT: That’s great.
Not quite the same when looking at the entire exchange, is it? Kinda like the way the Left consistently misquotes the 2003 State of the Union address, stating in no uncertain terms that W said Saddam was an "Imminent threat"
Some have said we must not act until the threat is imminent. Since when have terrorists and tyrants announced their intentions, politely putting us on notice before they strike? If this threat is permitted to fully and suddenly emerge, all actions, all words, and all recriminations would come too late. Trusting in the sanity and restraint of Saddam Hussein is not a strategy, and it is not an option. (Applause.)
Again, not the same, eh?
The whole tone was changed by just taking two lines out of the sound bite. Go figue.

• W was being stupidly insensitive to Morin about her 3 jobs. Europeans constantly comment as to how wierd it is that Americans have more than one as they usually claim to only have one. Why is it that the richest country in the world has people working 3 possibly min. wage jobs? Why is it OK that my IT job was outsourced to India and I have to now work 3 jobs including at Wal-Mart just to pay the mortgage and nothing else left over? I’m a baby-boomer too. I was and will be screwed by the Necons “let them eat cake” screw-the-middle-class thinking!
• Your quote about W’s feelings towards Saddam ignores all of the mendacious rhetoric from these Neoclowns about Iraq BEFORE W and his chronies said that. They all CLEARLY falsely indicated that Iraq and SH was a CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER to American freedom. More specifically 9/11. Which we now know, beyond a shadow of doubt and a moral certainty, that Iraq had NOTHING to do with. What’s meant by, “when we talk about Social Security nothing changes?” THAT’S Supposed to make folks feel better???
SS is one of the three rails of American politics. Most are too afraid to even discuss it. When they do, nothing actually gets accomplished, despite the fact that the system is broken, and will start paying out more then they take in the near future.
So, basically, it means that most politicians use SS as a pandering point, without any real intentions to make it better.
