‘Anger and radicalization’: rising number of Americans say political violence is justified
The June federal indictment of Donald Trump is “radicalizing” support for the use of force on behalf of the former president and current presidential candidate, according to the author of a recent survey about threats to democracy.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the aisle, support for violence to restore the federal right to an abortion has also increased over the last few months, researchers found, although there’s little indication that any organized groups support acting on this belief.
The Dangers to Democracy report indicates that a growing number of Americans support the use of political violence as the 2024 presidential campaign heats up and further indictments of Trump are likely imminent.
“The indictment is radicalizing support for Trump, but that’s not the only source of radicalization,” said Robert Pape, a University of Chicago professor who led the research. “You’re seeing growing anger and radicalization on the left as well.”
I like how it’s position as “oh, yeah, some democrats are supporting it, but, hey, those Trump folks!”
The number of Americans who believe the use of force is justified to restore Trump to the White House increased by roughly 6 million in the last few months to an estimated 18 million people, according to the survey conducted by the university in late June and shared exclusively with the Guardian.
Of those 18 million people, 68% believe that the 2020 election was stolen from Trump and 62% believe the prosecutions of Trump are intended to hurt his chances in 2024. An estimated 7% of Americans now believe violence could be necessary to restore Trump to the presidency, up from 4.5%, or 12 million people, in April.
Seven percent! That’s horrible!
The university’s Chicago Project on Security & Threats (CPost) research center has been conducting Dangers to Democracy surveys of American adults on political violence and attitudes towards democracy since shortly after the January 6 insurrection at the US Capitol.
The Chicago Project is a pretty darned left wing center, and should probably take a drive through parts of Chicago to see real violence. After a few more paragraphs on Trump
Democrats, however, expressed support for political violence for a different purpose. The survey found support for the use of force to coerce members of Congress to “do the right thing” grew from 9% in January to 17% – an estimated 44 million Americans – at the end of June, with the sharpest rise among Democrats. Support for violence to restore the federal right to an abortion also increased during this time.
Seventeen percent. Talk about burying the lede. That’s a whole heck of a lot more than 7%. But, not surprising. Democrats have always been willing to use violence for their political beliefs. We saw this in 2020 with all the BLM/Antifa riots. We saw this at so many protests prior to January 6th when Democrat supporters were present.
But, that’s all glossed over in favor of more discussion on Trump and his supporters. One would think that 17% would be a pretty important number.
The survey also found that nearly 90% of Trump’s most radical supporters believe the federal government is run by a “deep state” of immoral people.
I’m not sure about immoral people, but, those in the federal bureaucracy and high ranking positions are definitely leftists willing to use their government positions to push their leftist agendas. Something I’ve said for a long time is that Progressives had long term plans going back to the beginning of the 20th Century about capturing sectors. First, they captured the government bureaucracies. And they did that. There aren’t a whole heck of a lot of Republicans working in government, and the hardcore leftists force the non-hardcore leftists, Independents, and even Republican leaners to comply. Among the others that the Progressives captured were the entertainment industry, news industry, and unions (who started out willing to use violence), hence, they can push the hardcore agenda and whip leftists up to commit violence.
Then they went after the FBI and CIA, because they couldn’t abolish them, but, did not like things like the way they went after Communists. And the US military. They couldn’t kill off the military in the late 70’s, so, they slowly infiltrated the military, and now they support people with severe mental illness, the trans folks. They infiltrated the church, so many support things that are against the Bible, and have gone all SJW. They’ve made the environmental movement radical, and many of them and their climate cult folks are fine with political violence. They gather the sports and music folks, who live 1%er lives but are happy to push the government line. Push that government is great.
All these leftists are supporting political violence to support government tyranny.

When Antifa and BLM and the other kooks started rioting and burning and looting after the unfortunate death of the methamphetamine-and-fentanyl-addled, previously convicted felon George Floyd while he was resisting arrest, it was really just a nothingburger on the violence scale. Yet when Kyle Rittenhouse killed two men, and injured a third, while defending himself from being assaulted, why the left are still up in arms about that. And a mostly peaceful demonstration by about a thousand unarmed protesters on January 6, 2021, in which they killed no one and didn’t do much more than break a couple of windows is being treated as the most horrible assault on our country since April 12, 1861.

A completely unarmed protest, with no functional leadership, and no plan of action. If the Capitol kerfuffle were truly “an assault on the US,” it was planned and executed even worse than the Beer Hall Putsch.
The vast majority of convictions have been for a misdemeanor, under 40 U.S.C. § 5104(e)(2)(G) – Parading, Demonstrating, or Picketing in a Capitol Building; The penalty for violating 40 U.S.C. §5104(e)(2) is a misdemeanor conviction punishable by a maximum fine of $5,000 or up to six months in prison, or both. Most got probation; a few got a couple of months, which was satisfied by time already served as the Feds tried to keep them locked up even before conviction.
The Feds have gone hard after a few leaders, getting some lengthy sentences, but the incoming President should pardon every last one of them on January 20, 2025. They won’t be able to get their time back, but the fines can be returned and their records expunged. Then the next President should prosecute Merrick Garland and Joe Biden for malicious prosecution.
I’d note here that President Andrew Johnson pardoned everyone who participated in the unpleasantness of the War of Northern Aggression, which included Robert E Lee and Jefferson Davis. Mr Davis had been held in irons at Fort Monroe before any trial for him was conducted, before he was finally bailed out. The dummkopf from Delaware and his minions have treated unarmed protesters in a three hour protest worse than the defeated Confederate leaders, soldiers, and slaveowners.

The Trump administration DOJ and judiciary DID investigate the 2020 election and found no credible evidence that Trump won the election. As early as 2016 Trump claimed he would have won the popular vote if you tossed out the millions of illegal votes for Clinton appointing a Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity in May 2017. It was led by co-chairman Kris Kobach, the immigrant-bashing, vote-suppressing secretary of State of Kansas. The Commission backed Republican activist groups in finding “illegal votes” and recommending laws that result in voter suppression. The Commission disbanded finding few “illegal votes”. Trump and Republicans have consistently demonized US electoral integrity since. Electoral esults were largely disappointing for the GOP in 2018, 2020 and 2022.

The Trump election legal team (Rudy, Wood, Syd Powell et al) fired off 62 federal and state lawsuits challenging the election results and 61 were rejected, some by Trump appointed judges. Two petitions to the US Supreme Court (with a bulletproof conservative majority) were rejected.
Recounts were conducted in “battleground” states with no significant changes in the vote totals. Trump next advocated that Republican-led legislatures in Biden could overturn their state’s popular vote and appoint a slate of Trump electors when the Electoral College meets on Dec. 14. Unfortunately for Trump, all states and DC certified their EC votes, as the the EC itself.
In December 2020, Mr Trump called for a “wild” get-together in DC, “coincidentally” scheduled at the day, (Jan 6) and time Congress and VP Pence were scheduled to certify the EC results. What a coincidence!! Trump also convened rosters of “Trump electors” in the Biden-won battleground states on Jan 6. Trump wanted the states and VP to recognize these fake electors. The President further wanted the DOJ, DHS, even the military to seize the voting machines from the states. He repeatedly called Georgia officials cajoling them to overturn the state’s election. Remember “11,780 votes”?
Acting Attorney General, Republican Jeffrey Rosen, testified that Trump badgered the DOJ to declare the election fraudulent (recall Barr had resigned by then). When Rosen said the DOJ can’t overturn an election, Trump told him to just “declare the election fraudulent and leave the rest to me and the Republicans”. Trump wanted to fire Rosen and replace him with Trump lackey, Jeffrey Clark, but the DOJ and the White House counsel threatened to resign en masse and Trump backed down.
Trump and his advisors (e.g., John Eastman) wanted VP Pence to either 1) declare that Trump won, since the election was disputed and thus had to be resolved in the U.S. House, or 2) delaying Biden’s certification until battleground Republican state legislators could be mobilized to replace Biden electors.
On Jan 6 Sen Brooks, John Eastman and Trump fired up the crowd at the Stop the Steal! rally to march on the Capitol!
President of the Senate and VP Pence refused to award the election to Trump and himself. Trump called Pence a coward and wimp and the mob was shouting “Hang Mike Pence!” as they stormed the US Capitol Building, “coincidentally” at the exact time that Mr Pence was to certify the election, causing Congress to run for their lives. To their credit, after a delay of a few hours, VP Pence and Congress reconvened and fulfilled their Constitutional duties despite the mob attack.
What would the Proud Boys et al have done to VP Pence if they had caught him?
As is almost always the case, the foot soldiers were arrested for the violent crimes committed on Jan 6, while the co-conspirator instigators, Trump, Giuliani, Eastman, Hauling-Ass Hawley, Cancun Cruz, Mo Brooks strut around like banty roosters.
Rumor is that Mr Trump will be indicted for his actions related to the attempted overturning of the 2020 election. The indictment could be revealed as soon as today.
The violent attack on the Capitol on Jan 6 was only a small part of the conspiracy.
