Can you guess which cities are on the chopping block?
Target closes 9 stores in response to retail theft, adds locked cases at some stores
Target is taking action in response to retail theft.
On Tuesday the big box retailer announced plans to close nine stores, effective Oct. 21.
“We cannot continue operating these stores because theft and organized retail crime are threatening the safety of our team and guests, and contributing to unsustainable business performance,” the company said in a statement.
The stores set to close include one in Harlem, N.Y; two in Seattle, Wash.; three near San Francisco and Oakland, Calif.; and three in Portland, Ore. All “eligible” employees will be offered the opportunity to transfer to other Target locations, the company said.
The decision to close stores came after the company reported that inventory shrinkage — mostly the theft of merchandise — would cut profits by $500 million this year. In 2022, profits took a $700 million hit from inventory shrinkage.
There are only three in Seattle, three in Portland, and three in Poop City, er, San Francisco. You can bet the ones staying open are in the nicest areas of the cities. This is a direct result of hardcore Progressive policies on crime. This has nothing to do with Republicans, they have zero power in all those areas.
At some hard-hit stores, Target is finding ways to stem the losses, such as locking cases for merchandise categories that are “prone to theft,” as pictured below.
Shoppers have to ask for assistance from employees to open the cases. At this particular location in New Jersey, sections that were locked up included toiletries and higher-priced detergents.
Did anyone think that it would be necessary to lock those up? Good job, Democrats.
At the end of the day, it is the employees of those stores who will pay the price for the policies of Democrats. Do you think they will be able to move or travel far for work? But, then, how many of them voted Democrat constantly?
The George Soros-sponsored prosecutors believe that they are somehow helping the poor and disadvantaged, by pushing ‘decarceration,’ by not punishing crime, but what they have done is to excuse crime, and enable further crime.
So, the criminals get a break, right? The evil capitalists are covered by insurance, right?
But what about the neighborhood? What happens when grocery stores and general merchandise retailers, and the like simply give up, close their doors, and move out? Well, the employees lose their jobs, and if, in this story, Target has offered the employees jobs in other stores, it’s unlikely that all of them will be able to take advantage of the offer due to distance, travel, and other issues. The customers who chose Target, or whatever stores closed, have to choose other retailers, perhaps stores which are higher prices or further away.
Some crime-ridden neighborhoods, virtually all in large cities run by Democrats, have what some have called “food deserts,” areas in which all of the major grocery stores have moved out, and all that are left are the corner bodegas, which offer a much smaller selection, often more heavily geared to worse food, at higher prices.
Eventually, even bodegas need to adapt or go under. No business can operate as a charity. Even charities need positive cash flow. What will happen is what you see in most “low trust” areas. Lots of thick plexiglass and electric locking doors that only let in one customer at a time. Then the residents in that area will complain about inherent racism because their Korean-owned stores have higher prices, small selections and everything is in locked cases…. as if no one trusts the locals.
It won’t bother me. I live in a high trust area. People in my area don’t even lock their doors at night. No bars on the windows. Our Targets and CVSs are doing fine.
CVS announced today closing 300 stores. I am guessing most of these will be in those “low profit” areas too.
That’s not the best example, because Walgreen bought out part, but not all, of CVS a couple of years ago. Walgreen kept the more profitable CVS stores, leaving the ones which were already not the best to CVS.
Here in MI, the Walgreens in my neighborhood moved from the prime location at the corner of two busy roads to a new smaller location a couple blocks west down one of those roads. There are probably too many pharmacies around here.
I thought they said 900. But they are getting prepped to offer medical services. As well as getting out of the crazy cities.
So crime occurs in the cities, where most of the people are? More police, tougher enforcement, tougher prosecution.
These looting riots are organized crime and the lieutenants need to be caught and give up their organizers.
Sadly, Mr Dowd, but “More police, tougher enforcement, tougher prosecution,” are not what’s happening in our major cities. Too many have elected the George Soros-sponsored, police-hating, criminal-loving prosecutors who treat criminals leniently. You already know this locally, with Kim Gardner!
Kim Gardner was ousted. “It’s George Soros’s fault!!”, is lame. “It’s the fault of conservative politicians not funding schools, police, jails and the courts!”, is just as valid.
Local prosecutors have a difficult job, and unfortunately must balance the courts’ time and jail capacities with the common good. As I said, more police, tougher enforcement, tougher prosecution – I should have added increased court and jail capacities. It’s tragic that an accused criminal can’t be assured a speedy trial and is released.
Yeah, finally! But you voted for her, chubby. And you still have your local biased prosecutors who allow black thugs to go free um, …”for the common good”.
Funny.

Target is closing 9 stores out of 2000?
Target currently has 20 stores in NYC
Soon there will be only 19
Thank you all for expressing your concerns but I think with God’s help NYC will persevere through this trying time
The point is you fool, they’re closing nine stores all in Democrat run cities think about that. Yeah think maybe there’s a problem with the way Democrats run things? Now we know as a rich Democrat supporter and advocate you don’t give a rats ass about the 50 employees in that store that’s closing in New York why should you? They’re morons that will keep voting Democrat no matter how big you are to them they suffer from Stockholm syndrome. That’s those highly intelligent Democrat voters that you’re always touting there H. Yeah they’re really highly educated and real smart aren’t they? Just like you. You don’t care if one store closes here or one store closes there you know doesn’t mean anything to you because you don’t give a damn about anybody but yourself and your power. You are the quintessential Democrat communist. You are what has destroyed the Democrat party you personify what has destroyed the Democrat party. And you personify what will destroy America if your party stays in power which is why we’ve gotta get you out by any means necessary. With great prejudice.
Life in the blue zones-let’s defund the police!
Johnny ignores the crime and instead focuses on “look at all the stores they left!”. Johnny on 9-11…”2600 dead but look..still 8 million left in the city!”
H is just a glass half full kind of guy.
