UK To Fund Small Scale Geoengineering Projects

What could possibly go wrong?

U.K. to Fund ‘Small-Scale’ Outdoor Geoengineering Tests

A British science agency will provide 57 million pounds, or about $75 million, for researchers to examine ideas for artificially cooling the planet — including outdoor experiments to determine whether any of those ideas could actually work.

The announcement, by the Advanced Research and Invention Agency, or ARIA, is among the largest single infusions of money to date toward research into “solar geoengineering”: the notion of injecting particles into the air to deflect some of the sun’s radiation back into space with the goal of reducing the Earth’s temperature.

The government initiative is focused on testing several types of solar geoengineering. Those approaches could include injecting aerosols, such as sulfur dioxide, into the stratosphere or shooting sea-salt aerosols into low-lying marine clouds to reflect more sunlight away from the Earth.

Frank Keutsch, a geoengineering researcher at Harvard, said that as far as he knew, it was the first time that a government has called for proposals for outdoor experiments.

So, what happens if they test these, and actually mess up the climate? Because it is primarily driven by water vapor and the big nuclear furnace at the center of the solar system. But, hey, it’s a wonderful way to burn taxpayer money for usually no results.

And if the “small-scale” projects don’t work, the natural response will be that it just wasn’t large enough to do the job, so let’s spend more money and do it bigger.

William Teach: Because it is primarily driven by water vapor and the big nuclear furnace at the center of the solar system.

Changes in solar radiation do not account for the current warming trend. As the Earth is a watery world, the amount of water vapor in the atmosphere is largely dependent on the ambient temperature of the atmosphere. While water vapor amplifies warming and cooling from other sources, by itself, it does not explain the current warming trend.

But a trace gas does. By itself. In a watery world. With a sun shining on it. Where whether there’s even a warming trend is itself disputed.

I’m so old I remember when we were told that “snowfalls are now just a thing of the past.”

And then mother nature just had to go and wreck the narrative a couple years ago by giving the northern hemisphere its largest snow cover in 56 years.

And since we know you just can’t help yourself, you’ll react with your usual bloviating and word-salad rationalizations telling us once again just how a thing really is the opposite of itself.

Commenter: But a trace gas does.

Trace gases can have effects. Carbon monoxide at 100-200 ppm can be lethal to humans! Ozone is lethal at 50 ppm. Chlorine gas can cause severe symptoms at 60 ppm.

One liter of atmosphere contains approximately 10,000,000,000,000,000,000 CO2 molecules.

Atmospheric carbon dioxide absorbs infrared radiation (heat) emanating from Earth, releasing it in all directions, effectively slowing the loss of heat into space.

        More CO2, more heat retention.

Commenter: Where whether there’s even a warming trend is itself disputed.

Even ardent denialists admit the Earth is warming. Even Mr Teach.

fp: But a trace gas does.

Most of the atmosphere does not interact with infrared radiation. Without atmospheric carbon dioxide, the Earth’s oceans would be frozen. The history of Earth’s climate can only be understood by accounting for the greenhouse effect. Consequently, “trace” gases are important.

fp: Where whether there’s even a warming trend is itself disputed.

Multiple, independent lines of evidence, including surface, ocean, and satellite observations, confirm that the Earth’s surface is warming. There is no significant scientific dispute on this matter.

            david,

Your analysis is extensive but leaves a few questions.

Which part of the explanation is whoreshit?

Does infrared radiation interact with atmospheric CO2 or not?

Do you believe that CO2 in the atmosphere keeps the Earth from freezing?

Finally, do you really not understand that the Earth is warming? Even Mr Teach agrees that it is, although reluctantly.
