Here in Michigan, we have a power plant that pumps water from lake Michigan into a 2.5mi x 1 mi 110 ft deep reservoir when demand is low, then releases it back when needed. The setup can deliver 2100MW, about the size of two normal sized plants… for 9 hours. And you’re not likely to be killed by shrapnel from exploding flywheels spinning at supersonic speed. :-)

Your examples are mostly Communists (and Nazis), and your descriptions are sound, but miss the point by miles.
President Truman’s point was that, just as you use Communist as an insult, earlier conservatives used “Socialism” as a scare word.
TDoctors and the AMA fought Medicare and Medicaid calling them “socialized medicine”. 32 of the 33 advanced nations figured out how to deliver universal healthcare support to their people.
You’re not against Medicare, Social Security and disability are you?
Successful societies, e.g., the U.S., most of Europe, South Korea, Japan, Australia, Canada etc have capitalist economies with social programs. An economist cannot be both capitalist and socialist.
Large socialist/communist nations like China and Russia added aspects of captitalism to their economies over the years! The world favors private ownership and recognizes the value of capitalism, but alos recognize that unfettered capitalism can be abusive.
I don’t see why an economist couldn’t be both. A little from column A and a little from column B. I’m not against Medicare, Social Security and disability and a few other programs. The reason? They would not be successful if they weren’t in a basically capitalist system. The underlying entrepreneurial system and foundational property rights is what allows them to work.
How would anyone know what “unfettered capitalism” would be like since such a system has only existed in theory throughout history? What we do know (but H has yet to understand) is under capitalism one is free to be a socialist however under any form of socialism property rights and capitalism is not allowed. So at that point it becomes a question of Freedom.
It seems there’s always been a bit of socialism in modern capitalism my problem is the socialism today is reaching too far and becoming abusive. Especially when they dictate our cars, stoves etc for a theoretical program we all don’t wish to participate in. But then that’s what socialism basically is, isn’t it? Making the civilian population support and participate in a program by force. Sometimes lethal force.
I don’t know of any free countries full of capitalists building walls to keep their people in.
