Harvard Sues Trump Admin Like They Are Owed Taxpayer Money

There’s all sorts of entitlement these days. People who think they do not have to show ID when pulled over for simple driving infraction ending with them being arrested. People who think they can Demand others comply with their Beliefs. Ageing pop stars and their media friends who think they’re astronauts, not passengers. And then

Harvard sues Trump administration over $2 billion cut to federal funding

Harvard University filed suit Monday against the Trump administration, challenging its decision to cut more than $2 billion in grants in a high-profile showdown between the government and the prestigious private institution.

Harvard President Alan Garber said in a statement announcing the suit that the university chose to challenge what it considered unreasonable demands from an administration antisemitism task force to “to control whom we hire and what we teach.”

The administration’s demands, he said, “would impose unprecedented and improper control over the university” and came without any real effort to engage on the issue of antisemitism. The lawsuit was filed in federal court in Massachusetts.

“The gravy train of federal assistance to institutions like Harvard, which enrich their grossly overpaid bureaucrats with tax dollars from struggling American families is coming to an end,” said Harrison Fields, a White House spokesperson, in response to the lawsuit. “Taxpayer funds are a privilege, and Harvard fails to meet the basic conditions required to access that privilege.”

I mean, the cajones on Harvard for suing so that the federal government gives them taxpayer money like it’s owed to them. Harvard, as you’ll remember, is a private institution

So, then why do they demand taxpayer money? They get more than enough money from endowments and more. If the work they’re doing is so great then private entities will easily replace the money.

In addition, the Internal Revenue Service is scrutinizing the university’s tax-exempt status, and the Department of Homeland Security has threatened to revoke Harvard’s ability to enroll international students, who make up about 27 percent of its total enrollment. The Education Department is also probing the university’s federal funding.

“These actions have stark real-life consequences for patients, students, faculty, staff, researchers, and the standing of American higher education in the world,” Garber said.

Besides the fact that private institutions shouldn’t get taxpayer money scotch free, all Harvard has to do is shut down the Jew hatred and a few minor things the Trump admin has required. If they are taking federal money, then the federal government has a say in operations, to a point. And anything developed with that money does partly belong to the federal government.

They argue that the administration’s actions flout the First Amendment and Title VI compliance procedures that must occur before revoking federal funding. The university argued that the government has “made no effort to follow those procedures” before freezing or terminating its funding, which include attempting to secure voluntary compliance, holding a hearing and unveiling a report of findings.

I thought they were private? So, they have no ownership for the money. If the federal government gives aid to countries there were historically strings attached to the aid. Well, there are strings attached to the money Harvard gets. But, they and other universities should not get any taxpayer money unless it is for a specific project which benefits the United States.

Anyhow, Harvard will shop for a Friendly Progressive Judge to rule in their favor, then the Trump admin will still withhold the money as it appeals.

That’s right, Teach. Only official, signed contracts that you STILL AGREE with should be honored.

The Forty-$even administration is being run like he ran his ‘businesses’.

It’s little wonder no one trusts America because of our whimsical dictator.

We get it. NuConservatives dislike science because they don’t like the result – evolution, gods and demons, global warming, vaccines and the causes of disease.

It’$ a pillar of American life that legal contracts be binding and enforced by the courts. Forty-$even believes American law does not apply to him. Is there any law, policy, more, norm or tradition he will not violate?

Is there any of his violations that Mr Teach will not support???

Conservatives love science … like XX and XY chromosomes determine sex.

The government chooses who can sue them and for what. That is established black letter law. So are liberals now against the rule of law?

    • Elwood P. Dowd says:

If it was only as simple as connies believed.

In most cases, XX is a female and XY is a male, but not in 1-2% of cases. At 3 million births/year, even 1% results in 30,000 babies of inderminate sex. Look up “atypical genitalia” – the Mayo Clinic has an excellent review.

Have you had your chromosomes determined (karyotyped)? Few have.

It is amusing to me that our fantasizing pharmacist conflates gestational or birth defects with transgenderism.

        • Elwood P. Dowd says:

It is amusing that our platitudinous plasterer refuses to acknowledge human physiology. I guess they don’t teach that in Trowel-101.

In the real world many babies are assigned a sex by cement-brained doctors that contrasts with the babies’ hormone-based ‘gender’. Why that scares the bejesus out of MAGAts is puzzling.

Can someone explain why this so important?

          • alanstorm says:

Child, you are conflating “stupid” with “scary”. I hear this kind of argument all the time – but no one (wisely) has tried to claim that all – or indeed any – of these people constitute the so-called “non-binary” brigade.

Harvard if excepting Federal money then it has to meet Federal guidelines per Federal rules. This is standard when the government is dealing with any business and Harvard may call it self an education, but it is a business.

Harvard is having $2B stopped by the Federal government and as Harvard takes this to court they will lose. When Harvard loses they will likely have the rest of their Federal money stopped by the Trump Admin as the Trump Admin will be making sure that Harvard follows Federal guidelines. Trump may also stop foreign people from going to Harvard and many other Universities.

    • Professor Hale says:

Jguy, You are right. And with federal contracting it is even more clear cut than that since the contracts clearly spell out things like the contractors must obey federal employment laws, various treatment of employees, and even the means for contract dispute resolution. In ALL government contracts the government has the right to cancel the contracts under all circumstances. There are special courts set up for aggrieved companies to seek redress of their legitimate costs. Havard isn’t doing that. They are going to a friendly Boston Democratic party judge instead.

    • Elwood P. Dowd says:

Harvard followed federal guidelines at the time of the awards.

Now Forty$even wants to change the guidelines. He wants to tell Harvard how to hire faculty, teach classes and accept students. If they refuse to accede to his extortion he will void unrelated contracts and grants previously approved.

We get it. Cons hate college education, scientific research and those damnable Eastern elitists!

  4. alanstorm says:

“No government—regardless of which party is in power—should dictate what private universities can teach, whom they can admit and hire, and which areas of study and inquiry they can pursue.”

Here’s a hint, Harvard: Don’t take federal funds and you can call yourself “private.”
